Ah~! I just watched "The Eagle" and I liked it a lot! It held my attention even though it's not my usual genre. Or maybe it is *coughbuddystorycough*. :D

You might give the books a shot too. If you like Eagle of the Ninth (the book), then there are lots more you will like, because these really intense 'more than brothers', 'will follow blood-brother to the ends of the world', relationships are a feature of nearly every book. They're beautifully written, and they are slowly coming back into print.
I don't want to spoil it too much, but the relationship between Marcus and Esca is a bit different in the book, and I prefer it. I think it would be even more to your taste than the film.
Also, the book of Eagle of the Ninth has Cottia (erased from the film). She was my childhood crush. I wanted to be Cottia when I grew up. And it has Cub. And it has the little olive-wood bird. Lovely.
I tried to read it a couple of years ago but kept getting too distracted with other stuff. Then I had to return it to the library. Maybe I'll do better if I buy my own copy.
The funny thing is the cover is SO familiar, I could almost swear I read it as a kid. But if I had, surely I'd remember, because I basically remember everything I read as a kid almost word for word (wish I had that excellent memory now).

I have a similar memory for books I read as a child, and I, too, wish I still had such a memory!
