New TV. (Also: Has it really been since July???)

Sep 23, 2014 09:49

Last night, I watched the premiere of Gotham, the season premiere of Sleepy Hollow, and the premiere of Forever. And thought, perhaps this is the season that gets me watching TV again.

And honestly, Gotham kind of made me want to write meta... :-)

I would be very happy if you started writing meta again!

HELLO!
Welcome back.

I haven't watched GOTHAM yet but I'm psyched about it; I like the leads a lot.

FOREVER got such a pan from Alan Sepinwall and Dan Fienberg. You liked it, though?

I am (obviously) not huzzlewhat, but I will say that while the premise is tired and the storyline very procedural, I did rather like the characters, so I'm willing to at least give it more than one episode. But if you don't have a tolerance for Castle/Sherlock/Law & Order type shows you probably won't be able to put up with it.

I am still mourning that version of the premise from years ago that starred Nicholaj Coster-Waldau. I don't think I'm ready to marry the immortal New Yorker again ....

It is a pity that the NCW version didn't last. This one probably won't last more than six eps anyway. :-)

I would be very interested in what you think about Gotham. I am rather ambivalent about it at the moment. There are parts of it that I find intriguing and parts of it that I was just rolling my eyes a lot at. But I'm not giving up on it yet, so we'll see.

I think it's intriguingly positioned for a pilot, and it'll be fascinating to see which way it falls out. I kind of love the idea that Gotham city is perched on this cusp between old school organized crime style violence and the emergence of the new chaos that's roiling under the surface. In the "which came first" debate, it looks like Gotham might be positing that the new, weird villains are just the first visible wave of what will give rise to Batman, instead of Batman's appearance provoking a new brand of villain (which is common in other tellings, especially recently). It's fascinating to me that in this universe, Falcone might actually welcome the appearance of Batman... even while he essentially created him.

I am genuinely excited about Gotham (in a way I could never be about a Marvel adaptation) and I really loved the pilot, more than I have any comic book adaptation in a very long time. The casting is perfect, the writing is smart, and the tone is just right: dark but not without a sense of humour, a little camp but not glib. And I just love Ben McKenzie's Jim Gordon so so much. He's a character that could so easily be boring, but Ben understands exactly how to make him sexy, funny and charismatic.

Long story short - PLEASE WRITE META. <3
