I've tended to donate blood mostly to the Stanford Blood Bank in recent years. They have consistently been above average in being organized and in making me feel appreciated. I went to the polling place around 7:30 AM. Normally I don't encounter any line, or maybe there's 1 person ahead of me. This time there were 8 people in line, and most of the booths were occupied. So it looks like a heavy turnout this year (which is indeed what has been predicted ( Read more... )

I went and donated blood again today. They had a mobile unit only a couple of miles away and they were extremely short on my type of blood (O+). They call a 3-day supply "100%", and O+ was down to 2% - so I guess they had enough to fill demand for only about an hour and a half. I generally try to donate blood around the major holidays. Demand goes up (traffic accidents) and donor supply goes down (many people are too busy to donate). Sometimes I can do this in conjunction with cons (i.e. Memorial Day = BayCon), but I wasn't eligible for BayCon.
