Please don't ever call me Madam

Dec 05, 2008 14:25

It's easy for me to misinterpret general chat as being subtle insults by my boss.  It doesn't help that we speak two different versions of English.

I'm glad I have another graduate student colleague who can keep me grounded, so I can let go of any misapplied resentment.

Curious - do you not like madam because of the tone/context in which it was used, or does the word itself offend because of the connotation?

It implies that I am being offered more esteem and respect than is my due. It feels like I'm being mocked.

And it didn't help that I had just explained to my boss that I was an adult woman who didn't feel the need to please my parents. i.e. that I was grown up. :P So, he could have been mocking me for my old age.
