LOTR
I’ve read very little of LOTR fanfiction but this is such a gem. There are many stories but they all take place in the same universe and I happily gorged on them all in the space of week some years ago. They focus on the relationship between Merry and Pippin from Pippin’s birth to after the war. The world the author built is incredibly rich and I always reach for this universe when I want a wallop of hurt/comfort. My favorite stories are I Always Know You, The Care and Feeding of Hobbits, and the epic Fate and the High King’s Falcon. I love the Boromir in this verse.

I am not active in Harry Potter fandom which makes finding good fic extremely difficult. I was lucky enough to find these.
Shades and Shifts by fernwithy
I read Shifts while waiting for the midnight sale of the last Harry Potter book. I finished at about ten o’clock and then stayed up all night reading the last book so this fic has a special place in my heart. Sometimes I confuse it with the actual canon, that’s how brilliant the world and the characters are. These two pieces are Gen and retell the story of the fifth and sixth HP books from the POV of Remus and Tonks. They are long and plotty and just a gift really.
The Thousandth Man Series by hackthis
This one was posted in 2004 and has since been buggered by canon but I still re-read it. Here is another atmospheric, fully realized world, with wonderful characters in it.
These Four Kings by escribo
This is just heartbreakingly beautiful. Her characters are so well written and the story is sprinkled with little moments that make you go all melty. I usually don’t read WIPS but I’ll read anything that Dani chooses to write and count myself lucky.
Sherlock
The Green Blade by verityburns
If I had to pick a favorite I would pick this one. It’s brilliant. It’s filled with adorable moments between John and Sherlock, it’s a case fic, it’s long and plotty. This could truly be an episode of the show.
