I'm watching my favourite program! Or hearing voices. Maybe both. If this is anyone but my mum or the doctors trying to help me wake up, please leave a message! Unless it's DCI Gene Hunt. And then you can bugger off!
You play him well but the ostentatious dropping of H's really makes it hard to read smoothly and adds nothing, I find. You've got the vocabulary down quite well and that's more than enough to convey his accent.
I've done him both with h dropping and leaving them in. Gene's player leaves them in. I still prefer to write them out. His accent is insanely thick. It's annoying on a phone -- I do most of my tags by mobile -- but I still like to keep the Manc flavor for Sam by keeping out the h sounds in speach and spelling things the British way in his actions. Sorry if that's annoying.
That's the thing, I wouldn't say his accent is thick at all. It's Mancunian, yes, but by removing letters you're telling us it's so thick normal English spelling can't convey it. You're telling your audience that he doesn't sound like us, even for those of us to whom the accent is unnoticable and that completely throws me out, despite everything being IC Sam.
Like you said, Gene's player leaves in the H's, but with the syntax gives us very clear indications of the character's region and class.
