tragical mystery tour

Yesterday had its moments, but made me hate New York a little more. Everything is a little off-putting. The fellow pedestrians are foolish and lecherous. The servicepeople are either rude, or (as Maya would say) contort their faces into a mien of friendliness for the purose of licking asses. Expensive things are not fulfilling (this comes at no ( Read more... )

welcome to the northeast, where it smells like trash and everybody hates you

but its not so bad. although yes it is impossible to ride a bicycle without getting clobbered by reckless assholes, at least in the long term. i have a post-seven-stitches scar on my face to prove it

Well, I've got no sense of smell, so the trash doesn't actively bother me ;-)

Bike wreck? That's horrible :-( What happened? Should I purchase a helmet? Do the drivers around here at least have a shit-ton of insurance money for the hapless and clobbered?

New York is a pretty tough, pretty stressful city. I could try to get you in touch with some people I know around there if you're interested, though I'm not sure how many would be your type.

I heard about the bedbugs that live in New York dumpstered bedding! Yuck.

For a good time, go to Veselka if you find yourself at loose ends in NYC. I wrote some papers there one spring break and had a good time. Their borscht is the shit.

I was actually at one point considering moving from SF to NYC, but... Yeah, that experience sounds non-preferable to San Francisco. Speaking of which, you should visit again sometime!

Let S be the set of our friends in SF. While it is obvious that SF + S >> NYC, I conjecture: NYC + S = SF - S + (epsilon).

Case in point, NYC was fantastic and charming, just like in that TMBG song, when I was here with Jesse and Ashely. And SF was dirty, cold, rainy, and full of angry cab drivers once upon a time when I visited there. (I suspect that my emotional reaction to a place has everything to do with who I know there and I how I am interacting with them.)
