103009: Lime Crime's Possible Shadiness?

Oct 30, 2009 22:45

I wasn't sure if this was worth posting, but I think it's something a couple of people on my friend's list might like to know.

Fairly recently some news has come to light that Doe Deere's makeup line, Lime Crime, may in fact be a repackaged retailer. This wouldn't be a problem, except that 1.) she claims to make her product herself, and 2.) the ( Read more... )

I didn't know about all this controversy until Doe posted a video response - I happen to follow her on Twitter and my instinctive reaction was, No way, those rumours have got to be false. But when I actually read the blog posts, they didn't seem like the jealous rantings of 'haters' at all, but people with genuine concerns ( ... )

Aw crap, I posted my reply as a separate comment. Today is not my day.

Yeah, I didn't watch the video response. I was told she plays the victim role, and even if the controversy is a big misunderstanding, I think it would quickly make me want to rage. Plus, like you said, her 'haters' seemed to be mostly concerned customers.

I think that's mostly a marketing stunt. "My makeup is the best so it's totally okay if it's overpriced." The problem is that it's blended micas just like the a lot of different indie eyeshadows. Even without the repackaging controversy, this really lessens my appreciation for the brand.

Agreed. (Though I neutral of the rude comment left on that site. It's so eerily similar to the tantrums she's thrown in the past that I would believe that she posted it).

I have two of her shadows, and I'm planning to buy the TKB samples to compare them, but I have a feeling that I already know what I'm going to discover. And even if the colors match and it's some big coincidence, I'm still going to feel cheated.

Haha, it's not a problem.

Is TKB just pure mica colour? It doesn't need anything added to it to make it stick or anything? If so, I might go straight to TKB in the future, if it's cheaper. I'm also thinking of trying other brands such as Pure Luxe.

Not that I'm sure that Lime Crime is purposely repackaged mica, but like I said in Doe's blog, there are so many colours out there that some of hers are bound to be similar to others in existence...in which case, if the quality's the same, it makes sense to go for the cheaper version, doesn't it?

I think this is very sad, what with all the hype and almost cult following that Lime Crime has amassed...

Yeah, it's pure mica just like Lime Crime is. It's really just pigment. But if you use primer (or a foundation that doubles as primer), that's not really a problem.

I'm pretty sure Doe's stuff is repackaged. If it was just a couple colors then yeah, I could buy it just being a coincidence, but the problem is that it's not just a couple colors, it's multiple. And these colors also match Beauty of the Earth's repackaged micas (I believe Beauty of the Earth admits some of their colors are repackaged).

It is sad. She says she hasn't been repackaging, and I really want to believe her, but the more stuff that gets dug up about the mess the less inclined I am.

Well, I guess, on the positive side...through all this, I've found many other brands of mineral/mica-based make-up that are cheaper than Lime Crime. I did always think that her stuff was a little overpriced, but I initially thought that it was unique, too, which sort of justified it.
