CHARACTER
THE BASICS
NAME(S): Zelda Nayru Harkinian
CANON & TIMELINE: I guess if we're assigning timelines, Twilight Princess. More below.
CHARACTER TYPE: AU
AGE: 21

THE CHARACTER
APPEARANCE:

Slim, blonde and beautiful, Zelda is around 5'11 and slender, perfect for standing around and looking pretty at the parties of Hylian high society. Her hair, a dark blonde, falls approximately to the middle of her back and is typically worn loose though she has been known to use a headband in a pinch (Castle Town's humidity is brutal). She has the pale skin and the light blue eyes that are the hallmarks of the Hylian royal family and is usually found wearing clothes that are the height of fashion (think 2000s fashion with a little retro steampunk thrown in for fun). She also has the long, pointed ears that are typical of the Hylian race and her ears are pierced just once, usually with pearl drop earrings.

PERSONALITY:

Zelda, unlike her high society counterparts, uses reserve as a defense rather than an offense. She is shy by nature and unsure if she wants to take over the responsibility of running her late father's shipping empire, Harkinian Industries, and his role of unofficial diplomat between morally-loose but deep-pocketed Gerudo City and Hyrule with its high, white towers (both figuratively and literally).

Zelda is bookish and quiet, preferring instead to spend her time studying the poets and prophecies of Hyrule past. She feels that such knowledge is imperative in order to have a command on the Hyrule of today. Zelda is growing into her own and, when the occasion calls for it, can be a commanding voice both in business and in her personal life.

She possesses a vast intellect, causing some of the higher-ups in Hylian government to prick up their ears and wonder if, perhaps, her middle name is more than just an afterthought by her parents and more like an indication of the power Zelda holds within her. Like many Hylians of noble birth, she has some command of magic and psychic powers but she has not done much to develop them beyond the simple training she received as a little girl for control, not finesse.

She spends much of her time with private tutors, schooling herself in languages and politics in order to become more than just a figurehead for her father's company and to take over for the conglomerate of trustees assigned to "protect" her interests.

HISTORY & WORLD-BUILDING:

The Hyrule of Zelda's world is an analog of that within the game Twilight Princess with a few salient details altered. Rather than the medieval/high fantasy setting within the games, the world this Zelda comes from is modern and full of technology and sleek high-rises. The power is all political in nature and it flows where the money goes.

Areas like the remote Ordon are ripe to be exploited, by either the so-called good guys of Harkinian Industries or by the mysterious Twilit Syndicate, run by enigmatic front man Zant and backed by a power that Zelda isn't entirely sure actually exists. Before his death, Daltus Harkinian had struck a deal with the Mayor of Ordon to be the exclusive shipper of produce from the farm-heavy region...a deal that Zant desperately wants rescinded in order to keep Hylian money lining the pockets of the Syndicate, not the old guard.

Another source of less-veiled power is that of Gerudo City. Long has the desert den of vice wanted to overcome the seemingly-stable Hylian society and with the Twilit Syndicate funneling money out the backdoor the old Hylian families have turned to the less savory new money that the Gerudo have to offer in order to satisfy old debts and slake greed. Rising political star Ganondorf has opened Gerudo City to the deep pockets and deeper desires of the old Hylian families, leaving more than one to topple from ruin and shame.

With Daltus out of the way, Zant and Ganondorf have the perfect opportunity to put a legitimate face on the various embezzling schemes they have been putting into play over the past ten years or so but they need to gain controlling interest of Harkinian Industries. They manage to do so by threatening to expose Harkinian family secrets--including Zelda's magic that is not-quite-controlled as a good lady's should be, leaving Zelda with no choice but to sign over control to save her reputation.

Zelda, preoccupied with her father's death, feels her hand is forced and agrees to the deal, imagining she can work it out later and regain control of her company. What piques her interest more than corporate takeovers is the research being done by a young professor, Shad, into an ancient prophecy that seems to be coming true once again. Thinking this prophecy may be the key to regaining her inheritance, Zelda seeks him out, wondering if she could be the mysterious Twilight Princess named within the ancient tomes.

Parallel to Zelda's fall from grace is the meteoric rise of a young activist from Ordon Village. Going by the singular name Link, his (decidedly unkempt, by Zelda's standards) pretty face has been all over the papers and the tv giving soft-spoken but impassioned speeches about the perils of wildlife in the forests of Hyrule, and railing especially against the pollution of the region's lakes and rivers by waste from a newly-installed Harkinian Industries tower. Rumors are that the boy's "lone wolf" moniker is a little more literally based than previously thought and Zelda, on the behalf of Shad, makes her way to the forests to seek him out.

THE DETAILS
STRENGTHS/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Zelda is a shrewd businesswoman with a head for numbers. She's able to to read people well, from a distance, and uses her own reserve in order to keep that distance necessary for observation. She thinks of the greater good in most situations, unlike her high society counterpart and partner-in-crime Midna. She has trained in hand-to-hand combat, but only as much as a high society princess should, and has yet to put those skills to use in an actual fight.

She does have the magic and psychic powers that are a calling card of the old Hylian royal families but unlike in days of old, those powers are not encouraged to blossom and are instead taught to be suppressed at an early age in order to conceal any signs of weakness. Zelda also possesses a supernatural intelligence...her tutors believe it is just the product of good breeding and studying but Zelda, after reading tome after tome of ancient Hylian history, thinks it may be indicative of a more divine inheritance.

LIMITATIONS:

Zelda is somewhat shy and, unlike other versions of Zelda, her magic and psychic powers are not nearly as developed due to the decay of old Hylian society. She has trouble relating to others what she needs and panics when her company is subject to a hostile takeover by Zant and his Syndicate, much unlike the Zeldas we have seen before.

Also, being a city girl, Zelda has no tangible survival skills. She is unable to cook, fish or hunt and while she is in reasonable shape, she is by no means fit enough to travel long distances on foot or go rock climbing. Additionally, since she does have a penchant for uncomfortable footwear, Zelda is that much more hindered in covering long distances in rough terrain.

EQUIPMENT/PETS: Other than diamonds and silks, Zelda doesn't have much in the way of equipment. She does, however, have a satchel of ancient Hylian texts that she is researching with the help of Professor Shad and that have been swiped with a combination of her money and Ashei's espionage.

THE WRITING
SAMPLE - LOGS:

[Zelda isn't used to living outdoors and the fact that this place that she just...wound up in a few days prior is just a bunch of caves isn't terribly comforting. She's not really sure that she wants to risk sleeping on the ground (who knows what kind of icky things are down there?!) but there doesn't seem like there's much of a choice.

It's warm, at least, within the caves and Zelda's grateful for that. It sort of reminded her of when she was a little girl and went camping with her father, except the part where camping mostly consisted of staying in a thousand a rupee night cabin with security posted outside and every amenity known to man on the inside. One of those so called retreats had satellite tv and twenty four hour room service, after all.

Zelda explores for a little while, going in a lazy little circle around the area of the caves she's the most familiar with and eventually sits down, bunching up her jean jacket to make a makeshift blanket so she doesn't ruin the nice silk of her dress. No sooner than she's sat down then she discovers a long, heinous run in one of her silk stockings, adding insult to injury about the entire situation. It's pathetic and it's miserable, but that is all it takes to trigger the sniffles and Zelda starts to cry, all attempts at being an adult forgotten for the moment. ]

Midna? Shad? Where am I? Where are you? I...I don't even know...know what to do here and I tore my stockings and my dress is dirty and...and...

[By the Three, can anyone HEAR her? This is even worse than before.]

SAMPLE - MESSAGE:

[Transmission begins, and the cracking sound isn't from the quality of the medium but the nervousness in the voice delivering the message.]

Midna? Where are you? Where am I? I'm in this place...these caves. I have no idea what happened. I hope you can hear me. Call the authorities. The last thing I remember I was heading down 35th to the East Side, down near the university. I was going to talk to Shad about those prophecies again...I know you don't give a damn about my research and I know I'm rambling but I'm scared.

There's other people here, people who claim they're from Hyrule but Midna, I've never seen anyone dressed like them before. It's like I fell into a dream or something and all the players are in masquerade. If they're from Hyrule, it's a Hyrule costume party, and they're all old-fashioned and not...not like us.

[There's a pause, then the soft whimpering noise that can only be tears.]

Midna? Can you still hear me? I want to come home. I want drinks at Telma's and shopping down in the Castle District and anything but here. It's like some weird dream, the world's all turned upside down and I don't even know who I am anymore.

I...I guess I'm gonna go...
