What the hell do they want from me?

Seriously, what do I have to do? I get interviews for crappy jobs, so presumably they don't care that I am over-qualified, but a few days later I get a letter which may as well start "Dear John...". I am not going to try and take the managers job, if they pay ok and conditions aren't too bad then they will have a more than competent employee for ( Read more... )

Usually being over qualified doesn't mean that the boss is afraid you're after their job; it means they don't think you'll stay long. it's a kind of back-handed compliment ;)

It's a weird place to be just coming out of uni. I had success doing a moderately difficult job for a small company that didn't pay much. These sorts of companies need clever people willing to work for not very much; perhaps applying for crappy jobs to pay the rent isn't the way to go.

Once you have a medium job you can get this elusive "experience" that companies ask for. Also, lie on your CV. My policy is that if they want someone to know how to do a particular thing, that I can figure it out if it comes to it, so I just put on my CV, "yeah, no worries" ;)

Good luck

Yeah, obviously I am not planning to be there for the rest of my life, but some places have a high turnover of staff anyway, to them it shouldn't matter. It's so annoying, whatever the reason.

I am going to look for a medium job as well, but at the moment I need something to pay rent etc.

Good luck with the book, by the way.

Maybe it is a back-handed compliment; I'd like to show them my backhand...

Can you sign up with a temp agency? Probably this is a good time, since the summer students are all back at school now. I got a job with (*spit*) scottish widdows through adecco in about 3 days one time. It's shit job but you get paid weekly, and you can then relax a bit while looking for a real job. They won't care that you might leave suddenly, since it's a temp agency.

ouch...one thing i've learned is it take absolutely ages for the right job to turn up...you'll find something so long as you're persistant its just as frustrating as hell

Yeah, problem is it isn't just frustrating because I can't buy cd's and stuff, I actually don't have enough to live on. It is partly my fault, if I had worked harder at my degree then I would be starting a PhD now (probably). I hope something turns up soon

On job-seekers, I don't like it and avoided it as long as I could, but at the moment I don't really have a choice.

Well, I've been going for a few things. The two promising ones recently have been the ROE one (which I may have been under-qualified for, as I haven't worked much with children) and the opticians one (which I was over-qualified for, but they didn't seem to mind at the time). There are some other things in the pipeline, but it will take time, even if I get them, time I don't have. Put simply, I have about £30 until someone pays me and rent is due at the start of next month; I will get some job-seekers allowance at some point, but it won't even cover the rent.

I'm going out when my hair is dry, to try and find something. I may need to print some more cv's.

Thanks (whoever you are). I do know about that, unfortunately they are about three months behind on the claims, apparently. Thanks anyway though.

Well, I hope whoever they chose is good; I would kind of like to know why I wasn't chosen, it might help in the future.
