So, you want an iPhone...

I'm going to semi-bring out my professsional geek hat, such as it is. In my day job, part of my work involves dealing with enterprise cell phone accounts and figuring out mobile device strategies that will add value. Sometimes this means adding things that are cool and sometimes it means advocating really boring and seemingly obsolete things. ( Read more... )

Also, all those suckers who sat in line today came home to find out that AT&T was totally overwhelmed by people switching their service, and now they're sitting on their hands waiting for their numbers to port. As psyched as I was initially that the iPhone was on Cingular/AT&T, because that's who I use, I've learned a lot about their shortcomings in the last week or so.

Like I said to my mom today, if I didn't stand in line for Episode I, I'm not going to stand in line for the iPhone. It PISSED down rain on Wednesday, and people still sat there. They'll RESTOCK, people!

I bought one tonight. I didn't queue up for it. The boy and I walked up to the local Apple store (downtown Palo Alto, where it turns out his Steveness had made an in-person appearance a copule of hours earlier) at 7pm. I dropped the boy off, thinking that he'd need to queue up to get it. He was in and out of the store in less than five minutes; it took me longer to find a parking space.

I didn't have any trouble activating it. Of course, I didn't run straight home and try it. I had dinner with a friend in downtown Palo Alto first, so I didn't activate it until 10:30 PDT.

Um, if you take a Helio, do find out first if you can return it within X days to get your money back. Let's just say OS X has had a hell of a better bug-shakeout.

Are they still having problems? Their orginal product launch with the Kickflip was horrible, but I haven't seen the same rants about the Ocean. I've actually heard good things about the OS upgrades for the Ocean launch. I wouldn't be surprised, but I just haven't had that much experience with any of the Helio phones other than the Ocean.

I guess that the parnership of SK and Earthlink kinda left out the whole OS side, but they've had a year to work on it. (Note to self: Don't go into business with Sky Dayton without expecting a startup year of pain.)

Curiously,
Hyoun
