CHARACTER
✧ NAME: Fabian Kuijpers
✧ SERIES: Original Character
✧ HISTORY: In a world of magic where belief works in strange ways and the gods really do exist and are ridiculously human (and kind of jerkasses), things…happen, just like anywhere else. Granted, both humanity and the gods seem to have a penchant for endangering said world over the years, mostly by accident, but nothing’s perfect.
One such incident involved two warring nations, the balance of the world’s atmospheric energy, and the magical equivalent of an a-bomb. Once it exploded, the huge influx of magical energy released upset said balance, and the world automatically scrambled to fix itself by diverting that energy elsewhere. Turns out, people were the most convenient outlets.
So they…changed. Most of those affected changed physically, acquiring animal traits or just plain weird characteristics. A small number developed strange abilities, whether or not they changed outwardly. More still appeared to be unaffected, but their descendents would go on to develop mutations as well. This was over 70 years ago.
Fabian was born as the youngest out of five children, in the capital city of Panevis. It wasn’t a bad place to live in - provided you were middle class. The closer you were to either end of the social spectrum, the closer you were to being in a figurative warzone, with the poor struggling out in the slums and the rich caught up in backstage power politics. Fabian’s family was sitting just above the poverty line, and they were always busy. His parents were always working, and his brothers were either doing the same or too wrapped up in their own matters to give much thought to him, the youngest. Bluntly put, they couldn’t have cared less about what he did.
From a very young age Fabian proved to be a troublemaker; partially to get attention, mostly because that was just how he was. He was the sort of kid parents complained about; he didn't limit himself merely to pranks, often starting fights with the other kids and coming home bruised and occasionally somewhat bloodied. He was adventurous and made frequent excursions to the edge of the slums, where he made friends with kids who were either just as bad as him or followed him out of a mixture of curiosity and fear. It only started getting worse when he began losing his milk teeth and had sharp ones growing in their place, which marked him as different. Not that he cared once he had enough to make him look intimidating.
Eventually his troublemaking ways started being noticed by his family more than they were comfortable with, and resulted in furious rows with both his parents and his brothers. Oh, so now they cared? Feeling wronged, frustrated, and maybe making a bet with himself (how much did they care, really?), Fabian ran away at age 13.
So basically, dumbass teenager.
Even when it turned out that life on the fringe was much harsher than he expected it to be, he still didn’t go back when he had the chance. He just figured that his family didn’t care enough, and really, when it boiled down to it, he felt more…welcomed on the street, in a way that one could describe as borderline masochistic. The first two years he stayed with two different groups in shared crashes, until they splintered and went their own ways. During the short period he was alone Fabian went and picked a fight with another kid, a girl three years younger than him and…
…Got his ass kicked.
And in some weird way, they ended up being friends, and stuck with each other because there wasn’t anything to lose from an alliance like that. Though Fabian and Kaja got into less fights since survival was a higher priority, they gained a reputation among other youths as kids you generally didn’t want to mess with - the girl’s been doing this kind of thing for years and did you really want to try the guy who looked like he could bite your hand off?
When he was 16, he caught a pickpocket red-handed and chased him down. Fabian had been pretty pissed off, but once he cornered him he found out it was really just a very terrified and desperate 11-year old boy named Marcell. It was hard to stay angry at someone who looked so scared shitless, so in the end Fabian hauled his ass over to their hideout and offered a proposition: stick around and help them out, and they’d teach him the ropes and try not to let him get eaten alive on the street. And so they acquired a third member.
This apparently started a pattern, because within the next few months they picked up two more kids; Alp, a slave who ran away when his collar malfunctioned, and Lilya, a little girl whose eyes could induce hallucinations. Initially, it was about using each other. The younger kids depended on the older ones for protection and shelter, the older kids found that the younger ones were useful for distractions, not to mention that two of them had abilities and the other knew how to cast magic. Over time, they grew emotionally dependent on each other because they were all kids who had no where else to go, effectively becoming each other’s “substitute family”. Life was rough and there weren’t too many soft edges to it, but they could deal with it.
There’s not a whole lot of interesting things to talk about during the year or so since they’ve been together. They were forced to vacate their hideout when someone reacquired the warehouse for use, moving down to the sewers. At some point they discovered that they could travel to a manhole behind a mansion located in the inner districts through the sewers; Fabian had the bright idea of sneaking inside during a party to steal something to be pawned off. It wasn’t as if those rich folks were going to miss one little thing or two, right?
And then it went wrong and he got arrested for attempted robbery. Whoops.
✧ TIMELINE: End of history; shortly after being arrested.
✧ PERSONALITY: Fabian’s a punk, more or less. He might have mellowed out a little since getting smacked down by reality a few times and suddenly finding himself de facto leader of a cohort of mostly young kids, but he still very much acts tough and bold. While he doesn’t actively look for fights anymore (since, you know, he’s feeding four kids), he remains rather aggressive and easy to rile up; fortunately he also cools off pretty quick so long he doesn’t deem it an insult to his pride and reputation.
Disregarding his temper, he’s actually pretty sociable, often making an effort to at least talk to people, and he’s certainly not above a bit of playful teasing and ribbing. Sometimes he comes off as being tactless and a jackass since he’s blunt about his opinions and he speaks in a very rough manner, but it’s more out of nature than any actual desire to be a pain in the ass towards others. He’s self-confident and perfectly aware of his limits, even seems a bit proud of himself - as far as he’s concerned, his experiences just mean he can deal with whatever life throws at him.
That said, although he’s brash and frankly kind of dumb at times, he’s also surprisingly mature and perceptive. He’s observant, takes in the details, makes note of anything important or useful, and you need to have some capacity for being level-headed to last as long as he has. “Cynical” might be the better word here; he’s witnessed, heard and experienced enough of society’s ugly side that he doesn’t have much faith in the goodness of people (and himself, when it comes right down to it). Life’s rough, society doesn’t really care about the ones stuck out in the slums, and he…simply accepts these as facts of life and tries to make the best out of what he gets, even if it’s not much.
A pretty big thing about Fabian is that he has this “now” mentality; that is, he tends to focus on the present and what’s directly next. In the same way that the future is some distant thing to him, so too is the past; what happened already happened, ancient history, don’t dwell on it. He’s used to a lot of things in his life being temporary or transient, be it alliances or friends or crashes, so although he enjoys them while he can, he’s not terribly attached to many things. In some ways, it makes him adaptable and emotionally resilient since the past doesn’t bother him nearly as much (which is not to say he forgets them however); in other ways it bites him in the ass because he has minimal concept of long-term planning and no real idea what to do with the “future”.
For someone who grew up neglected and doesn’t believe he can change anything, Fabian’s…a decent person, underneath the rough edges. He’s incredibly affectionate and not afraid to show he likes someone once they earn a certain degree of trust, even if occasionally his affection involves a bit of roughhousing. Although he’s accepted that life sucks and he sits in a moral gray zone (stealing and beating people up are totally okay in his book), Fabian’s frustrated with the unfairness of it all, and sometimes, sometimes when he sees some sort of perceived injustice that he has the power to do something about, he can’t help but want to try to make it right. He’s afraid that one day he’ll end up crossing a metaphorical line, that one day his itch for a fight might cross over into full-blown bloodlust, and it can only go downhill from there. It’s one of the reasons why he keeps the younger kids around - if he pulls shit like that, they’ll be the ones paying for it too and he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself.
If it isn’t obvious by now, Fabian’s got some serious protective big brother instincts in him. To be fair, there’s always some loyalty (and thus, protectiveness) to whatever group he falls in with, but younger kids get this pretty easily. He’s fiercely protective of his kids - Kaja’s something of an exception, but only because he knows she can handle herself - and by extension, anyone he considers to be his charge. His “replacement family” have the highest priority however, and he’s even trying to figure out something like a future for them. Maybe it’s too late for him, probably is, but those kids don’t deserve to stay in the slums and they still have a chance at something like normalcy. Considering he was willing to steal from a noble family because he wanted to get them out of the city? When he considers someone to be under his protection, they are under his protection.
Tl;dr he’s a dumbass teenager with several soft spots and super protective of his kids. By which I mean he will stab bitches if anyone touches them.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: The most obvious is that he has a full set of shark-like teeth, and enough jaw strength to tear off someone’s hand if he really tried. …Not that he actually has. Fabian also has a heightened sense of smell which is especially sensitive towards the smell of blood. He has a somewhat accelerated recovery, though all this really means for him is that small injuries normally heal completely within a day or two and more serious injuries that normally take weeks to recover from generally take less time for him.
Technically being magical himself, Fabian has an above average resistance towards magic of all kinds. On the one hand, while this means most offensive spells hurt him less or have diminished effects, healing or protective spells don’t work very well on him either.
On a more normal note, he’s a pretty fast runner and good climber, since he spent most of his growing up being very adventurous and possibly lacking danger sense. He’s got some dextrous hands on him, though what he’s really good at is pickpocketing and shoplifting. He’s strong and a good brawler, using the environment and pretty much anything he can gets his hands on as a makeshift weapon. He’s also skilled with a knife, but chances are most people will never find that out unless he’s put into some life-threatening situation.
✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Night
✧ MASK DESIGN: A bandit mask. Subtle, really.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: The abandoned warehouse he used to live in with the other kids. It’s full of various boxes and crates and is mostly boarded up, save for the front entrance where the boards have been loosened to make a “door”.
SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON: It feels so stupid talking to a pocket watch--
So, from what I’m gettin’ this is pretty much some fucked up mass kidnappin’, yeah? No way out so far, all kinds of weird shit. Anyone checked if there’s a sewer here or something?
Oi, brats. [Despite the phrasing, it sounds affectionate, and like he knows exactly who he’s referring to.] If any of ya can hear this and you damn well better find this PORTAL thing if you’re here, ya know where to look for me. We got work to do.
✧ THIRD PERSON: The very first thing that alerted him that something was wrong was how comfortable the bed was. Fabian hadn’t slept in a comfortable bed for ages, and he was sure as hell that jail wasn’t meant to be comfortable at all. The second thing was the obvious lack of sound when he swore right afterwards.
Okay. Right. Now was not a good time to panic, that just lead to doing really stupid shit. Even if nothing was making sense.
He looked around his room a little - it was basic, which suited him just fine. The mirror bothered him though; on the principle that he didn’t trust things that did stuff they weren’t supposed to do. Mirrors were not supposed to be showing…him moving through what looked like the streets back home, how the hell did that even work -
Just staring at the mirror was already making his blood boil.
…So maybe punching it wasn’t the best idea either, fuck ow ow, but at least it got the anger out of his system. He watched as the cracks in the mirror fixed itself, and had to resist the urge to punch it again because he’d just be hurting himself unnecessarily even more than he already did.
First order of business: get bandages. Then find out where the hell he was and explore and more importantly, look for an exit. On the bright side, at the very least he wasn’t in a jail anymore.
✧ ORIGINAL CHARACTER QUESTION: Once he works through the initial rage in private, Fabian will explore and get to know the people, to gather information. As frustrated as he is to learn that there’s no way out as of yet, he can deal with it and would gladly trade information with anyone and try to help out in what ways he can, if only because being uncooperative would be pretty dumb. He’s in no big rush to get home, at least initially, since he’s…well, supposed to be in jail, derp.
On a more minor note, it’ll weird him out how everything’s for free in Promenade. What the hell man.
