I agree with every single thing you wrote here I can't even begin to comment on anything specifically.
Lately I've been on the fence about having children because of everything you've written here. I can educate my son or daughter till I am blue in the face, but eventually they are going to have to go out in the world and face these things in their own. I don't know if education is enough to battle what they are going to experience. There are subtle sexist undertones everywhere.
I am especially fearful of having a daughter because of the mixed messages and pressure society puts on girls.
And I don't know if I can handle the pressure I would put on myself to make sure she is getting all of the right messages and none of the bad ones.
I agree with everything too. We should have a more open attitude towards sex in certain, safe forums. I mean, I fdon't think that people should be open about their sex lives all the time (TMI at work!) but they certainly shouldn't feel ashamed for what they like or dislike or for stuff they don't know. Ignorance breeds, well, STIs a lot of the time!
I swear that things have gone backwards in terms of women's rights lately. It's so frustrating!
My best friend's daughter is about to turn 15. Her mother has always told her she was the prettiest girl in the world and she believed it. When she was in 5th grade, around 10 years old, she stopped believing she was the prettiest because she wasn't the most popular. Her self esteem went down because she didn't fit the mode of what the boys considered pretty. She doesn't consider herself ugly but she would only rate herself a 7 or an 8. Her mother & I do our best to boost her self-esteem. I don't think her self-esteem will go back to a 9 or 10 until she learns to ignore what others say about her. But I know it's hard to do in high school. Her hormones are out of control and everything in her life is so dramatic.
