It never rains but it pours

I would never in a million years have guessed, at the age of 25, I'd be eating raw squid quite happily. But then, I would never have guessed I'd be living in Japan either. When I was younger I didn't really even want to travel abroad, let alone live there. The thought of not understanding and not being able to communicate made me almost fearful. ( Read more... )

I suffer similar problems with German, though surely nearly not so extensively because German and English are relatively so similar. But it's increasingly common that someone asks me the English for a given term, and I say, "Uhh..."

I often find that looking it up in a dictionary is far quicker and easier than trying to conjure it up from the depths of my soggy rotten Japanafied brain. Japan uses so much English incorrectly that even I'm starting to; I've used the form "Let's ~ing" in jest so much now that it no longer seems wrong in my mind.

I remember your post from a while back about how Germans would just start speaking fluent English when you just asked what the meaning of one word was in German and I can completely understand your infuriation, it happens to me a lot too. Except here it's often by people who are not really fluent in English but cannot conceive or acknowledge the existence of someone who isn't Japanese speaking Japanese.

Please post more about your language encounters on your LJ, if you feel inclined, as I would love to read them.

My town doesn't have a subway system, only a cute little red train. We don't have any problems with gropers here but I was groped when I was living in Tokyo...wankar. Oh the signs, you'll be meaning the ones that say "molesting is a crime!" and "we do not tolerate groping", yeah they're usually in more urbanized areas where the trains are more closely packed with people. On the other hand I have heard stories of people being tricked into being arrested as a groper; usually 2 people, a guy and a girl will work together, the girl claiming she was groped and the guy claiming he saw it. The poor innocent bystander who has done nothing is arrested and can do nothing in his defence. That sucks.
On a similar note found some manga porn on the bullet train...took it home for research purposes.
