John Mayer.

For those of you who oppose John Mayer for whatever reasons (most of you because he has one famous hit song), listen to the song Neon. Then let's talk about his inability to sing, play guitar, or write lyrics.

Stairway to Heaven must be a terrible song, it's played so damn much!

Stop being so anti-normal.

I listened(because I'm a masochist) and he really does sound like a Dave Matthews ripoff. I mean, he can play the guitar much better(Dave has to be the least talented guy in his band), but I stopped caring about how talented guitarists are awhile ago, probably because I listen to so much progressive metal. Johnny plays a difficult riff, but he does it over and over and over again. Jesus.

It's Acoustic Rock, not progressive metal.

Geez Louiez. let the guy play the guitar part for the style of music. I never said he was breaking any boundaries.

I'm just saying why I don't like it. Does all acoustic rock do that one-riff thing?

I downloaded that song because i figured that just because i really hate his hit song doesnt mean ill hate the rest of his stuff. That song was so mediocre it hurt. I cant say it was terrible, but thats because Mr Mayer wont let me. He doesnt take any chances with his music, and in this song refuses to even raise his voice above a mumble to (heaven forbid) express any passion. Its the same case musically, he discovered a guitar riff that sufficiently compliments his mumbling and, while it isnt a bad riff per se, it certainly isnt good enough to use invariably throughout the song. Hell, the only way i could tell we had reached the chorus was when he repeated the title of the song a few times.

So im sticking with my conclusion that John Mayer sucks, and i didnt even know his first song was a hit (until very recently), i just knew that it was not good musicianship.

Admitted. Recorded songs suck. "Why Did You Mess With Forever LIVE." From 02.02.01. He raised his raises his voice. Sings without the damn guitar.

However, the recording was taken while he was playing in a coffeehouse. You can hear a few conversations during this song. (added bonus!)

Besides that. I'm not sure all of his songs are about verse. chorus. verse. Are you trying to tell me, for one second, that many of Paul Simon's songs sucked because they didn't have a defined chorus?

no, its not the lack of a defined chorus that bothers me (hell, one of my favorite songs is a 25 minute Pink Floyd track with nothing more than 4 verses), its the lack of ANY variation musically, vocally, or lyrically (variation, that is, from the 50 or so other songs exactly like it).

And besides, his first song had a well defined chorus and some variation to it, and it wasnt any better.

And i refuse to acknowledge Paul Simons work post Garfunkel, that breakup is still too painful for me.

Come on. Give in to "Kodachrome" by Pauly Boy for just once. Kodachrome is all I ask.

Are you a fan of any contemporary acoustic rock (that's not some "acoustic version" of a non-acoustic song).
