So, no childhood-destroying? Maybe I'll have to see it once it's out on dvd.

I think, if anything, it actually added levels of depth/complexity to the story for me. It still was like the book, but...with more. And some of the scenes reminded me of feelings from my own childhood. I'd definitely recommend watching -- but, as a warning, it is really dark and sad in a lot of places. They don't Disneyfy it (and I think it's better as a result).
