First of all, apologies to those of you that haven't heard a peep from me in the last little while. The kids went back to school, then I went back to school, then the kids got sick, then I got sick... Yay for new school years and new germs ( Read more... )

I hear that! Not the part about being a man - but having a better grasp of French would be nice.

Hey, qwittle and I are thinking about improving our french. If we make a group effort, it might be easier. We could practise and such... maybe take a class all together?

That would be something I'd be definitely interested in!

so we get to choose how we want to be evaluated for the course

I would SO TOTALLY do interpretive dance. I wish we could have done that in some of my chem courses. Sadly, though, grad school even had comprehensives, which was total hell.

Is American Gods the one that's Terry Pratchett and Gaiman? Or am I getting some wires crossed?

Ha! Interpretive dance chemistry. I'd pay money to see that. Someday I will ask you to explain the basics of chemistry to me - through dance or some other means.

Nope, you're thinking of Good Omens, which was Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman together. Also a really good book, but lighter than American Gods.

I was pretty sure that I remembered a Pratchett/Gaiman book...

That reminds me... have you read Carl Sagan's "Dragons of Eden"? It's got nothing to do with dragons. It's his book on the evolution of human intelligence. I'm looking to read something like it... something a little lighter than "Gödel, Escher and Bach: The Eternal Golden Triad" or maybe about the same.

I couldn't find anything last night at the library, so I grabbed one of Coupland's fluffy clouds. (I'm a sucker for his stuff ever since I read Microserfs) ... I'd like something more substantial, though.

No I haven't read Dragons of Eden but it sounds like something I should add to my list...

Some of the best fiction I have ever read includes the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons (there are 4 books in total) and the books Only Forward and Spares by Michael Marshall Smith. They had to create a new category of fiction for his books (they call it Slipstream fiction). Snowcrash by Neal Stephenson is another good one. And of course, Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein is a must.

The best non-fiction I've read in recent years is a book called Soul Made Flesh, which is about the history of the "discovery" of the brain. It's like a combination of philosophical and scientific history and it's really well written.

I could probably list books all day - every new one I think of reminds me of another one I've read...

Hey - are you guys free for a drink or something this weekend?

Oh yeah, you told me alright! ... and I believed you.

Um. QQ means what? I'm afraid my brain cannot put that together this morning.

I wish you could be here for Halloween too - but I will make sure to post many pictures so you feel like you're here!

QQ is crying, but I don't see that so I typically just say outright "que que". ... and that's my story.
