Okay people, I'm curious. I've been taking my Perception class for about 6 weeks now and it's raised some interesting questions. I have some opinions about some of it but I'd like to get some perspectives from other people, so I thought I'd ask you guys some of the questions the prof has been asking us

more topically, i think a friend once told me that the human brain sends 10x as much information as it receives [mind you, he could be insane; the verdict is still out on that one...]. so where does that data go? just endless bio-feedback in your mind? is that why people talk to themselves and imagine detailed stuff in their head? or is that just me? :P
perception is weird. like, why do all girls think that they are fat?

That's a good point and I've heard things along those lines too. The brain is a fascinating object. Apparently, even though we can't technically hear anything over 20,000 Hz our brains will still translate some sounds above that frequency (or whatever), just at a lower frequency than it actually is. Again, that raises the perception question. We aren't hearing what's out there in reality - we're hearing our own interpretation of reality.
For the record, I do a lot of talking to myself as well. Our brains never stop working, unless we're dead. And a brain that is deprived of sensory input will make up its own, which may explain some of the bizarre dreams I sometimes have.
Hey, not all girls think that! I certainly don't. Besides, there are guys that are just as bad.

i am the original hardcore BTE fan. i even emailed kevin once, and he emailed me back. :) i even have in import king of new orleans single, and most of the tracks from Artifakt. friction, baby is also a wonderful album. in fact, i was just a few hours ago listening to desperately wanting on my mp3 player. that song makes me sad.
i love how the brain translates frequencies that we can't really hear. evidence suggests that bands like my bloody valentine and the flaming lips intentionally use frequencies not normally heard in music, in order to disorient the listener (as a purposeful and desired reaction to the "music"). i love pavlovian social conditioning. :P

As far as perception, I don't have time to write a bunch that I would then argue against. But I think auras, while being a matter of perception, can also be real. I know someone who can read injuries (past injuries) in others by their auras.
Descartes said that perception (or rather our means of empirically gathering info for perceptions) were faulty. Look at the moon. It looks to be the size of a quarter, yet it's not the size of a quarter. Etc.
You know, the reason I may not be able to post replies sometimes is because you IP log. Hmmm... just realized that. Has that always been on?

What if my awake time is a dream.. and my dreams are my awake time?
When I talk to myself in my head.. what if it's another dimension's version of me talking back?
What if I am already dead and just slowly going over my life from beyond the grave? Would explain when you feel deja vu yer just fast forwarding parts.
