Okay, I've been trying really hard to bite my tongue on this issue, but after yesterday, I really have to vent about this.

That little girl that went missing in Portugal. The British one, whose parents met the freaking Pope yesterday. You know who I'm talking about. If not, it's pretty easy to Google and it's been all over the news.

what about all the non-white girls who get abducted by pedophiles every day? do they garner attention by the pope and hollywood?

the implicit classism and blind bigotry is kinda sickening. and yeah, those parents should be bitch-slapped.

and hollywood stars should have their collective heads examined. instead of putting up millions of dollars for a reward which has not even been requested (something which hollywood stars have plenty of, but the kidnapper obviously does not want; s/he already has what they want), why don't they put that money towards charities for poor raped schoolgirls in Darfur, or something equally atrocious? why? because it creates a much better media profile to extend your loving money to help the poor little white rich girl in the foreign country, right?

what grabs my goat is the parents who seem more smitten with the notion of being adored and sympathised with by hollywood and the pope than with getting their little daughter back.

It sucks, but after seeing the shit in Southeast Asia that's nothing. Used to read about the slave trade in southern China with a modicum of frequency in China Daily. It sucks ass, and parents have to watch, but honestly... even parents who are super diligent can lose their kids easily in this world.

There was one story I read about an 8-year-old having been kidnapped and was on a train to be traded, I think in Guangdong province. She waited until her abductor went to the bathroom, then ran and got the police onboard. The guy had quite a surprise waiting for him when he got out of the can...

I know you aren't talking about abduction, but responsibility, and I definitely hear you there. Inaccountability pisses me off to no end. However, it ain't going away, and the innocent will continue to suffer for it. "Stupidity: Jeopardizing sensible people since 62,000 B.C.E."
