For challenge_the’s theme, what if. It’s a little rough, because I haven't practiced writing X for a while, but hopefully it's not too terrible.

Arisugawa Amaya’s first memory of her parents was her father telling her mother that he would protect her, no matter what. Years later, Amaya asked her mother what her father had meant, and she had simply replied that it was an old promise with a small smile on her face; her eyes gave away how much this promise troubled her. She sometimes wondered how her parents had fallen in love, when her mother always seemed so flustered by her father’s constant and loud proclamations of love. One day, she had asked Yuzuriha, a long-time friend of bother her Mama and Papa, about what her parents were like when they were younger, and she had laughed and told Amaya that they were exactly like they are now. That had reassured her.

Her Mama and Papa hadn’t had many friends; it sounded like a horrible thing to say, but Yuzuriha and her strange dog, Inuki, were their most frequent visitors. A sad-looking man with violet eyes also seemed to be close to them, because every year her parents and Yuzuriha had met him at Tokyo Tower and talked to him for as long as they could. Sometimes they had visited graveyards with him, laying flowers down for friends who had died. Amaya had asked her Papa if his friends were in heaven, and he had replied that he thought so. Amaya had never asked either of her parents how their friends had died; she assumed that they had gotten caught up in the big earthquakes Japan had fallen victim to a few years before she was born.

Amaya’s Mama had rarely let her guard down, but she seemed happy with Papa. They loved each other very much. Her Papa always kissed her Mama’s palm and looked so sorry, and although her Mama tried to hide it, she always looked a little sad. When she was trying to sleep, she had always heard her parents talking in hushed tones about the past, but she never understood why they were talking about seals and angels and dragons. She rarely heard them speak of the future, but when they did their attentions would divert to the ever-darkening sky outside and they’d look worried. She had once heard her Mama ask her Papa if they had done the right thing without realising Amaya was there, and when she had spoken up, both of her parents had fallen silent.

The world was sick; that’s what all the newspapers said. Japan was being hit worst, and even as millions of people started moving away, her parents stayed. One day, her parents had talked all through the night; she could hear her Mama and Papa crying but didn’t dare go and ask them what was wrong. The next day, Amaya’s Mama had called Yuzuriha and talked to her in hushed tones, while her Papa packed all of her belongings into the big suitcase he used when he visited Mount Kouya. Yuzuriha had arrived, hand-in-hand with her husband Kusanagi and heavy with child, asking her Mama and Papa if they were sure, if they were disappointed in her for wanting to leave. Her parents had nodded and reassured Yuzuriha that they understood, but had looked sadder than Amaya had ever seen them look before.

Papa had explained to her that she would be going away with Yuzuriha and Kusanagi for a while. Amaya hadn’t understood why, but she thought it must be like a holiday; she’d never been on a holiday. She waved cheerfully to her Mama and Papa a day later when she had boarded the plane, hand-in-hand with Yuzuriha, and hadn’t understood why her Mama was sobbing into her Papa’s chest, or why her Papa was stroking her Mama’s hair and crying. Her Mama and Papa never cried in front of her before. Not even her Papa could manage a cheerful smile to boost her spirits.

It was almost ten years since Amaya had gone to America with Yuzuriha and Kusanagi. Their son, Hiroshi, was the little brother she had always wished for, and Yuzuriha and Kusanagi treated her like their own daughter. Amaya still missed her parents terribly. When she began to worry, Yuzuriha hugged her and told her that they would come back, one day. Until then, she just had to be patient.

But what if they never came back?

END
