Brilliant review! I really want to see this now. It airs in the US on PBS in April, but I'm not sure if an NTSC version of the DVD will also be made available or not. Hope it will be, as it sounds amazing!

Hmmmm . . . intriguing to say the least. I love seeing performances of Hamlet (Nicol Williamson's and Derek Jacobi being my faves--with Anthony Hopkins and Patrick Stewart as their Claudius' respectively!) so I shall try to seek this one out.
Great review - will have to make a point of watching it myself.
Thing is - having studied "Hamlet" at school for A level examinations, it's somewhat put me off revisiting the play in any capacity.
As you know, I've found amateur (community) theatre a great outlet for fulfilling my acting desires - and indeed once performed myself in a small-scale production of "Hamlet" - as Rosencrantz, ironically. Are there any community theatre groups in the LA district?

It was brilliant wasn't it? I just got my DVD from Amazon uk and we had to sit down and watch it the night it arrived. I too am incredibly pleased that not only did they make a DVD version for those who couldn't attend the performance, but actually took great pains to make it as close to the theatrical experience as they could.
I had heard at one point someone mentioned they might just put the stationary camara footage of the stage show they use for their archives on DVD. But they didn't and I was delighted with what they came up with. If you haven't seen it you should.
I went out and bought it just a few days after it came out over here in the UK and I can say it's one of the best DVD's I own.
You mentioned the red 'Muscle' shirt... On the making of documentaries that were broadcast over here just before Christmas they go into a really long discussion about how they arrived at that particular costume choice... I'll re-watch it and try and get it typed word for word for you... It's quite amusing!
And wasn't Mariah Gale simply OUTSTANDING as Ophelia!! I'm betting she'll be one to watch in the near future...
