Year after Year after Year after Year

Jan 09, 2008 08:40

In the grand tradition of trying to remember the way I feel at some arbitrary moment in January, here goes this:

1. What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before?
Ended a long term relationship, got proposed to, moved to Lawrence, moved to New York, worked in an art gallery, worked on Wall Street, played in a ska band

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Well, last year was "not date a guy named Kevin in 2007," which was a resounding success. This year is "smoke more pot" and "cry at home instead of at bars and parties (ie: take self out of situations where sadness seems inevitable)." That last one is pretty hard, so I may go back to rhyme time with "Stay great and masturbate in 2008"

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
A friend from high school's older sister, but no one close.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No!

5. What countries did you visit?
United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Finland.

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
""a fulfilling romantical relationship, a job that gives me health-care, money to travel more than I did in 2005 (daunting, i know)." ---that was last year, which I am proud to say I have fully fulfilled. This year? Closure on a particular relationship or the active pursual of said relationship, an assurance of life plans, a room where I can keep my books and music and not feel like everyone expects me to leave soon." ----those were the past two years, and I took myself very seriously for them! I suppose I have closure on said relationship, have given up on having life plans, but am happy to say have a room with books and music I don't feel the need to/am required to flee from. This year I'd like to find closure on 2 different relationships (ugh), travel still more (doubtful, but still desirable), an income that allows for savings (most assuredly looking up!), stable companionship with someone I genuinely care for who lives in the same city as me.

7. What date from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
That day in January of the fanfarlo concert, February 21st (arriving in Turkey), March 11th (arriving in Egypt), March 19th (sleeping on the nile), April 20ish (realizing New York is fun), June 28th (an englishman in Kansas), September 21st (moving to New York), October 19th (first day at new job), December 14th (civil war party), December 21st (lifestyle echos of "all friends are bastards")

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
recovery from a broken heart and subsequent complete change in worldly outlook-- okay. this was last year, but it is fitting, so it stays. Also, staying sane enough for sanity but insane enough for fun, and restructuring my life credo in a way that makes it fun and still count as a life.---well, these were the last years, but apparently I have compounding achievements. My biggest this year would probably be not losing my head in situations where I am the only individual present of american nationality, and in conjunction with this, being nice and friendly even though people think they may hate you before you do anything at all.----compounding indeed! Achievements in 2007, some of the above, not getting gang raped, being honest to people I care about even though it was and continues to be the hardest emotional hurdel thus far, being a bit more honest with myself. (In a twist of irony, last year's failure was "Ignoring what I actually want to do because I want my actions to make other people happy," which I have ceased to a point, but at the expense of my own happiness)

9. What was your biggest failure?
Every relationship that still lingered, started taking myself too seriously, putting on a convincing front of happiness/being happy.
