Hanabi was training herself so that she could push herself to her limits without using the curse seal. Though she liked Kabuto well enough (more than was really sensible, in her opinion, but she couldn't help it), she honestly doubted that his offer to help her with the curse seal was anything more than kindness. After all, the Orochimaru from ( Read more... )

Kabuto applauded gently, stepping into view as soon as she finished. He'd known from the start Hanabi displayed exceptional talent. But more than not being disappointed, he was pleased with her progress, with all that she'd accomplished recently. It had been a pleasure to oversee her training, regardless of certain unpleasant factors, and it was continuing to pay off.

Once more he allowed himself a genuine smile. Maybe she couldn't tell, he was very good at faking. But he had faith in her observational skills. Any praise he offered would be empty words by now.

He'd brought a lot of little gifts today. Mostly things to help with training, more medical scrolls, explanations of how to make simple medicines, bottles with hard to find chemicals.

And then three more scrolls, sealed with chakra and metal. They were the ones he'd really come to talk about, but pleasantries first.

Never hurt to be polite.

"How are you today, Hanabi?"

Hanabi had sensed someone nearby, and given how few people actually knew where she lived, she had to assume it was Kabuto or Toph (and more likely to be Kabuto).

"Well enough, thank you," said Hanabi. "I've figured out a new technique, as you just saw."

Three guesses on which snakey bastard she intended to use that on.

"How are you?"

"Oh, you know. Good as can be expected, given the circumstances. A few of my little side projects have turned up results recently."

His major ones had not been going nearly as well, but then, nothing was ever perfect. "One of them might interest you, even."

Lightly toweling herself off, Hanabi had a drink of water from one of the bottles she'd set out for herself and approached Kabuto. A side project that might interest her? There were a number of things that might interest her, but she knew the one that would be the most interesting. The curse seal was supposed to grant someone power...but as far as she'd noticed, it weakened her. It was one of those things you had to surrender to in order to master, and Hanabi didn't like the idea of surrendering to anything Orochimaru had inflicted on her.

"Oh? There's a lot of things that might interest me, Kabuto-sensei."

She was a little startled at herself for calling him that...but then, he was, more or less, her teacher of late. That was the way shinobi addressed their tutors and instructors, and doing that with Kabuto gave her a sense of comfort. Things were nothing like she might have predicted they'd be even a year and a half ago, but it did provide a small bit of grounding.
