"Katrina?"
"Amelia?"
"Jessica?"
Kate Beckett approached her circle of colleagues, though in reality, it was more of a triangle. An isosceles triangle, since Ryan and Esposito were standing as close together as humanely possible while Castle sat on the table across from them. They all had troubled expressions on their faces--Esposito looked like he just dry swallowed a huge pill, Ryan looked like he forgot his mother's maiden name, and Castle...
Castle looked like he was writing.
"What are you guys up to?" the female detective asked. Castle turned toward her with a strange expression.
"Katherine?" he wondered out loud. Ryan and Esposito made faces, and shook their heads.
"Not a K sound," Esposito announced, and Ryan nodded his head in agreement, and looked down at his lap.
It was only then that Kate realized her two detectives were each holding a bird in their hands.
"Guys, what are those?" she almost snapped. Castle gave her an incredulous look.
"Turtle doves!" he said like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Which it was, according to Ryan and Esposito's nods. Kate rolled her eyes.
"Why are there turtle doves--" she started, then remembered it was Castle. And then she realized what they were trying to do. "Are you guys naming them?"
"Yup!" the writer said, lifting his head up proudly. The dove in Ryan's lap cooed as the detective stroked its wings.
"Melody?"
The dove in Esposito's lap squawked when he leaned forward lightly, and flew out of his grasp, straight into Kate's hands. Her deft fingers caught it before it could fly elsewhere, and happened to grip it in a certain area...
She sent her boys a skeptical look. "You know this is one is male, right?"
xx
In the end, the pair of turtle doves were named Kev and Javi because it was funny that they looked up whenever Castle calls for one of the birds.
