Question

Nov 22, 2024 09:27

For anyone who happens to read this. Someone I don't know over at Mastodon said they were on LJ back in the day and that the Russian purchase was made in order to suppress dissidents who had been organizing here. I am skeptical, but wonder if anyone else has heard this?

I don't believe that was the purpose, but at some point, the Russian government demanded access to the platform, and used it to suppress dissident. Many people I knew have left because of this.

I don't really want to blame the company because they don't really have a choice in the matter, but am I supporting Russia? I don't pay them money, so... only a little? I copied most of my stuff over to DW, but not all. I still feel like this is my home.

I migrated both my LJs over to wordpress when I started davidscottmoyer.com, so it's all there except photos. The Russian users and American users are pretty segregated here, it seems. Of course companies always have a choice. They could have shut down. They could have moved all their server data outside of Russia. Of course, we don't know details. I certainly don't feel like I'm helping Russia in anyway right now.
