“What’s this?” Mal poked at the tin of heart shaped candies sitting on the table.
“Present.” Jayne replied from across the room where he was sitting and cleaning one of his new guns.
“You got me a present?” Mal asked incredulously.
Jayne grunted. “Didn’t say it was for you. Found it in front of my bunk. Don’t much care for those. Thought someone else might like ‘em.”
“Huh.”
“Hey Cap’n!” Kaylee smiled as she and River entered the room. “Ooooh Valentine’s candy. Who’d you get these for?” She slyly reached over and took one, popping it in her mouth and then smiling innocently at Mal.
“Didn’t. Seems Jayne got himself an admirer.”
“Jus’ cause I found those in front of my bunk don’ mean I got an admirer.” He growled as Mal’s smile grew bigger. “Who’d be buyin’ me presents on this boat?”
“It does seem to be a mystery,” Mal said. River walked over to the table and began to pick through the candies, considering each one carefully before discarding some and stockpiling others in front of her. Mal shook his head and looked back at Jayne. “Who do you reckon’ got them for you?”
“Don’t rightly know. The only one I could think of was Kaylee.” He looked over a Kaylee who smiled as she shook her head.
“Wasn’t me. Not that I wouldn’t buy you a present, but I didn’t buy anything special on our last trip planet side. Just some engine parts.”
“Now Kaylee how many times have I told you not to waste your money on the ship.”
As Mal and Kaylee continued their long standing argument, River crossed the room and sat down across from Jayne who eyed her warily.
“Go away.”
“Meaningless holiday from Earth-That-Was mainly perpetuated by huge corporations to continue holiday gift giving past the traditional holiday season.” He glared at her as she handed him the candy. “Was wrong before. You look better in pink.”
Mal stopped. “River? Did you buy the candy?”
“Simon bought stamped sugar hearts. Thought it best not to tell him they were for this one.”
“Hey. ‘This one’ is sittin’ right here. And don’t go buyin’ me presents.” He gathered up his things and stomped off to his bunk.
Kaylee sat down next to River.
“I’m sorry honey. Jayne doesn’t mean to be so... well. Like Jayne. That was a real nice thing you did.”
River stared at the now empty table and smiled. He had taken the candy hearts with him.
