Maybe I should consider product design instead of book cover design...

I assume you've all seen Amazon's new ebook, Kindle. I'd love to hear opinions, though I think I can guess the responses of my flist.

My first two reactions (I don't remember if I saw the picture or heard the name first) were "Wow, that's hideous" and "Conjuring up thoughts ( Read more... )

you can bet I wouldn't take a $400 device into the kitchen over a bubbling pot of marinara or into the tub.I probably would, because I'm an idiot. I already put page curl on my $25 Arthelius Heroes magazine. Sheesh... I can't have nice things ( ... )

I'm with you. I really like having a collection of print books and I like being able to browse other people's libraries and vice versa.

E-books are apparently a fast growing thing but they aren't for me.

Being the Star Trek geek that I am, I have always liked the idea of using a PADD (personal access display device) to be able to read books. I think it would be great, especially for vacations or uber-thick tomes.

That being said, the Kindle is ugly. If it were Star Trek cool I'd consider getting one. Just so I could have lots of reading material with minimal space while travelling. If it were in color, it's not a bad idea for magazines/newspapers. It could save lots of trees, and minimize the need for me to fill the recycle bin as often as I do.

Books are still better though--for all of the reasons you mentioned. Ideally, I think it would be great if say you purchase a book from amazon and also receive a free download of the book. Or maybe there is someway to put a little computer chip uploaded with the digital copy of the book in the spine of a book which you could then scan into your PADD.

I'm going to post my response as a journal entry on my own page, because it's that long.

Sorry.
