Lots of Inertia

I've been at a couple of college speeches he did over the years. Once you hear him speak more than once the "comical" stuff starts getting annoying. Not so funny once you've heard "dare I say it Change the world" a hundred times, not to mention the vaguely ethnic gravelly voice you mentioned. See, I know exactly what you mean without hearing it. He has a few stock phrases he repeats over and over. most of it is repeats of phrases he said on the show, and that was a LONG time ago. You are very lucky he was amicable since he's a pretty cranky and lonesome old man himself these days, A sad sack. Maybe you'll invent and be a new kind of Science Guy yourself though! Science rules!

Yeah, he said that line a few times in the time we were there. It gave me the impression that the fun loving Bill isn't the real Bill exactly. More of a face he put on (well) to make his subject come across better. He seemed way more tired and (as you put it) lonely than I expected. I saw all these faults. But hey, if I was going to talk about the Science Guy to people who cared I'd give him the rose colored glasses treatment... for old times sake.
