Seeing a shaved head girl in the street makes me think art student to be honest!
No I do not think they had their heads shaved against their will *rolls eyes*
The cancer thing is just fuckin ridiculous, I'm sorry. My sister in law struggled with breast cancer for years (all well now) and she never had any issues with anybody. She even advised me with dying mine.
Final question...I'm 30 and my mum still wants me to be the blonde I was when I was 5. I don't care if I'm naturally fair haired, I don't want to be. It doesn't feel like me. I'll stay purple thank you very much and if I fancy a change there's a rather nice fire engine red with my name on it!
I DEFINITELY wouldn't think it would be offensive to people who are bald because of chemo.
it definitely doens't make me think of people who have been shaved against their will.
and it might make me think of queer girls . . . but, like miranda, possibly only because the girls I know with shaved heads are queer. but then you have natalie portman, so that kind of nixes that. plus, if people think queer when they see Cat with shaved head, why is that a problem?
my parents don't nag me about my hair because I haven't done anything to it like shaved or dyed it! heehee. I wonder what my mother would say if I came home with a mohawk at thanksgiving. I bet she'd cry. and make me feel ridiculously guilty.
anyway, your mum is probably just insane (but I still like her).
love love love,
Claira
P.S. I'm only one hour off your time right now! heehee.
1) No most definitely not fascist. Queer is harder to pinpoint from just that, and at least for me, I don't draw that conclusion from that alone. I usualy pick up on body language more.
2)Again I don't draw that conclusion right away, but depends on what is running through my mind at the time.
3)No, because who am I to say how someone wants their hair to be. I know people who actively shave their heads on a consistant basis, so if knock on wood I or someone close to me had cancer, I wouldn't be offended if someone shaved their head.
4)No they don't cos you are their baby no matter how old you get and they will always want some say in your life. As for you mom being insane, there's always a possibility, but as I've said before it doesn't matter what they think as long as *you* feel it's right. Becides you got approx. two more years you have to deal w/ her then you can go give the two fingers and tell her to bugger off if you want. Tho I don't recomend it unless yer gonna be on your own.
When I shaved my head a lot of people asked me, "is that because you're gay?" The answer was usually something like, "are you asking me that because you're an asshole?" For me, shaving my head and being gay weren't related except that in both cases I am standing up for myself and asserting that I have the right to be whoever I want to be. My family didn't bother me about it that much. I actually can understand your mother's objections. Hair has often been seen as a symbol of status, and to have hair cut off has often been a form of degradation (although it has also been a symbol of royalty). I don't know that much about the history of hair, but there are definitely things that get called up by certain hairstyles. The only argument I can offer up (and an argument that I think trumps all else) is that you must must must be allowed to be in control of your own body. The fact that something has been used to demean people in the past doesn't mean it should be banned. In fact, if you can reclaim some of those things, more power to
