Memorial Day

Around here I've noticed a very somber attitude toward Memorial Day. When I moved up here there were places selling the flower arrangements, etc. But it was mainly just another day to barbecue or go on boat rides. And for many it still is. But as the war in Iraq has gone on longer and longer than we were initially led to believe it would, people (at least around here) have started getting a lot more serious about it. There's a lot more being put into honoring not just the fallen, but the ones who were injured, incapacitated, and the people who loved them and lost them over there. It's hitting a lot closer to home, now.

Indeed. It seems that everytime I turn on the radio or pick up the newspaper, our casualties are multiplying. These are people, human beings, and if they return at all, it's often with a life altering injury or PTSD. War is awful, and this one has gone on entirely too long. Nothing is going to save us but love and compassion, and that seems in short supply, especially where our country's leadership is concerned. The whole situation makes me sick. We will be our own undoing if we don't wise up, and soon.
