Main:It annoys me how consumerist American society is. I had to go to the store to buy a couple new pairs of jeans to replace the pairs that are now unwearable and it struck me as to how much it really pissed me off

Good point on the identity issue.
Sometimes I feel like the government would like us all to fit into several designated demographics for which they may maximize the utility of each dichotomy and minimize the incidence and virulence of anomaly occurence- a great way to ensure that a rolling stone gathers no moss ;)

Who would you give the credit to? Lizard men? Half gods? Satan's children? Zionist media conspiracy? Something else?
I don't personally know who or what to blame, but some force or another may be at work..or it could just be causality..

Does "the government" take credit for private designers? Textile manufacturers? Sweatshops?

The ideological force that wants us all to fit neatly into demographic charts is far beyond "the government".
