I've only seen a few of those movies but the same thing happens with movies that are based on books. I think you're right though, it is as if some film makers hate their audience! Or it could be that they don't care.
I am not sure why this is done. The majority of the general public usually has not read the original story and therefore it will not matter if they stick to the story. Then, if they can make it more corny, flashy, have longer sex scenes, happy endings, etc- for whatever reason certain factors seem to draw more attention, and money. That leads me to think that for many filmmakers, it is a matter of how much money your film can bring in. But for the viewers who come in counting on seeing something that pays respect to its original story, the movie is a disappointment. And the end result is that popular filmmakers get rich.
I am curious about this promotional easter egg that nobody followed through with! What's up with that?
