Kazuma was an average fourteen-year-old born into a mafia family. He was a star student and the president of the Student Council, as well as being good in sports and pretty much everything in general. Despite all this, he was bored with life and was just waiting for something exciting to happen. This so-called excitement came in the form of a silver-haired boy with mismatching eyes who landed in a box in the middle of Kazuma’s school hallway. Accompanying the boy was a cell phone that a lady who called herself the Dark Liege-ruler of the demon world-used to get in touch with Kazuma. She explained that the boy-Nora-was a demon of great power who had disobeyed and needed to be trained, then formed a contract between him and Kazuma that gave the latter control over the former’s power.

Kazuma was reluctant to have anything to do with it at all at first, until they came up against a demon that held two of his fellow student council members’ hostage. He told Nora to defeat the demon for him because he felt responsible for the hostages. That led to an argument between Kazuma and Nora that allowed the demon to capture Kazuma. Nora made no attempt to help him because he knew if Kazuma died he’d be free from the contract, but Kazuma managed to free himself and called Nora a “whipped dog” who would rather run away. Enraged by the comment, Nora decided to fight the demon in order to prove his worth to Kazuma. He transformed into his true form-the hellhound Cerberus-and defeated the demon in time to receive another phone call from the Dark Liege. That time when she asked Kazuma to be Nora’s contract holder, he accepted.

The duo found themselves in various battles following their first but it didn’t take Kazuma too long to notice that someone was watching them. But bigger problems arose when the hand where Kazuma had the contract seal began to bleed. Around the same time Kazuma and Nora ran into a demon named Knell and his familiar spirit-members of the Resistance, the army opposing the Dark Liege Army. Kazuma recognized the familiar spirit as the man who’d been watching them and the two pairs began to duke it out. The only problems with that were that Knell was immune to Nora’s fire magic and that, as Knell went on to explain, Kazuma’s seal was bleeding because they’d been using too much magic. Because of the contract, all of Nora’s power is stored in Kazuma’s body, and without something to regulate the magic’s flow, all magic use takes a toll on the human’s body. In the end, Kazuma and Nora managed to outsmart Knell and put an end to their fight for the moment.

Back in the demon world, the Dark Liege assigned Lieutenant General Barik to travel to the demon world on an errand to give Kazuma a dog tag bracelet. Its purpose was to control the release of magic so as to limit the damage done to Kazuma’s body. Kazuma refused the bracelet at first and spurred the tension between Barik and Nora to get them to fight-in order to improve Nora’s hand-to-hand combat skills. It was a success and Kazuma ended up accepting the bracelet. Soon after, he got another call from the Dark Liege who warned him that if Nora touches the dog tags on the bracelet, the “forbid” command would be nullified. So Nora spent the rest of the chapter trying-and failing-to trick Kazuma into giving him the bracelet and releasing the contract. After a run in with a bank robbery Kazuma used reverse psychology and convinced Nora he needed to work for his freedom.

Next we find the duo on the beach, searching for Knell so they could question him about the Legend of Cerberus. Things didn’t go well as Nora tried to fight Knell and then argued with Kazuma and repeat. Right as Knell and Kazuman were discussing Nora’s “problems”, something fell into the ocean behind them and created a huge splash. That something turned out to be the Dark Liege Army’s Naval Fleet General Rivan, who was in the human world on a fishing vacation. Knell took off and Kazuma was left with trying to get information on Cerberus from Rivan, who challenged them to a fishing contest for it. Nora got frustrated with fishing and began attacking Rivan, who has a very short fuse. Rivan went crazy with anger and it was left to Nora and Kazuma to stop him. In the aftermath the power of both attacks washed tons of fish ashore and Kazuma claimed them and won the fishing challenge. Rivan only told them one thing; that Cerberus will destroy both the human and demon world.

Sometime later the two got involved with Knell and three other Resistance members who Nora, as per usual, tried to fight. Finally, the demon Tyron used his magic to open up the ground beneath them and they fell into the abyss. While down there Nora explained to Kazuma that his power was greater when Kazuma got angry and told him to get angry so they could use magic to leave the abyss. Kazuma complied and Nora used a wind spell to blow them back up. As the Resistance members walked away Kazuma questioned their motives and Knell told them that the Dark Liege left pieces of her soul hidden in the human world and they were tracking down the pieces to destroy her.

Nora and Kazuma decided to search for the pieces of the Dark Liege’s soul and collect them before the Resistance could. They tracked down an agent who made deals with demons and after dealing with a Resistance member and winning the seller gave them a suitcase of demon world jewels to search through. In the aftermath of another battle between a King Jelly-possessed Barik and the sudden appearance of Rivan-again-Nora found the Fire Element Soul Stone. Later, while Nora was out searching for more soul stones, Kazuma was led by the seller to his informant’s place. The informant wasn’t there at the time but Kazuma learned that his classmate, Hirasaka, worked for the informant at his shop.

The next day at school Hirasaka gave Kazuma a letter from the informant that had instructions for him to follow. It first led them to interrupting the Resistance while they were gathering another soul stone and also landed them face-to-face with the Resistance’s boss. The boss forced Nora’s seal to release and broke Kazuma’s dog tag bracelet, leaving him no way to control Nora. Nora managed to reseal himself and collapsed in exhaustion. Kazuma was enraged by being so helpless and it’s revealed what the last piece of information in the note was: an offer of power.

Next, while Nora was busy learning to summon a magical weapon, Kazuma went to meet the informant, who offered to give him a way to use Nora’s magic as his own and increase his own power. The only condition was that Kazuma had to give the informant five years of his life. Before he could make his decision, a blast of magic was felt coming from Nora’s direction and Kazuma left to help him out. Nora was found fighting Tyron and losing because he had yet to be able to summon a magical weapon. But Nora refused to give up, and when Kazuma’s emotions intensified, Nora was finally able to successfully summon his weapon. After Nora won, Kazuma pulled out the pocket watch the informant gave him to seal the deal. He pushed the button at the top and disappeared, telling Nora he “better watch out”.

Two months later Kazuma returned, magically five years older, and helped retrieve another Dark Liege Soul Stone. Nora was shocked by Kazuma’s change and while the two of them were arguing catching up, Melfia, the Fire Brigade General for the Dark Liege Army, showed up and it’s revealed that she was the one who taught Kazuma how to control Nora’s power and use it as his own. In a flashback of Kazuma’s training with Melfia, we learned that his reason for accepting the offer of power was because he wanted to become Nora’s equal.

Through a series of events, Nora and Kazuma ran into an old foe from the Resistance, Pooson. Kazuma propositioned him to take them to the Resistance’s home base in exchange for the Soul Stones he and Nora had. They struck a deal, but on the way to the base they were stopped by Knell. During the battle, Knell managed to take the soul stones from Pooson’s unconscious body and Rivan appeared to help take him on. We learn that Rivan and Knell had a past. In the course of their battle, Rivan was severely wounded. But just before Knell could strike the finishing blow, Kazuma and Nora jumped in and stopped him.

Thanks to Knell’s taunting and insults about how weak they were, Kazuma took the time-in the middle of the fight-to explain to Nora that he’s determined to make Nora the strongest demon. As a result, Kazuma’s emotions made Nora’s power stronger and the demon was able to perform a fire-type spell that burned Knell despite his immunity. As a result, Knell was defeated (but not killed) and Kazuma told him off before Knell sank into the ground and disappeared.

Personality: At first glance Kazuma is a typical junior high school student with good grades and slightly overbearing leadership skills. He runs the student council with an iron fist and a no-nonsense attitude. His manner of dealing with people is blunt, honest, and in most cases harsh. He’s not afraid to be himself and doesn’t care whether or not people like him. He is often insulting towards people he doesn’t care for and in some cases even towards people he considers a friend. Despite his young age Kazuma tends to take up a huge amount of responsibility.

He repeatedly defends the human race against the demons that see them as nothing but food and takes it very seriously if someone is caught in the crossfire of a battle. He takes pride in being a human. But like-wise, he also takes it upon himself to do everything he can to help Nora become stronger. Despite being human-minded and very unimpressed by demons at a whole, he takes an interest in helping Nora because he felt it gave him purpose in a world that he was otherwise bored by.

Kazuma is also extremely dedicated. He always goes out of his way to help the other student council members and even gave up five years of his life so he could become stronger and in turn help Nora become stronger. He’s not one to run away from his duties or make excuses when he screws up. He doesn’t run in the face of danger or stand back and accept his fate. One thing that makes him and Nora a good pair is the fact that they share an equal amount of stubbornness and would never let other people control their fate. He rebels against people who try to tell him what his fate will be or what choices he has. He’s the type of guy who, given two options to pick, will always create a third. Sometimes just purely out of spite.

He’s prone to violent tendencies that he usually takes out on Nora. He’s very easy to irritate and even to anger as long as you know what buttons to press. But the thing about getting him angry is that you need to be prepared to suffer the consequences. Kazuma is a very intelligent guy and uses that to his advantage every chance he gets. He’s also not above rubbing his brilliance into other people’s faces. He also has a very sadistic type of humor and will often use the “forbid” command on Nora just for the fun of it. He also gets a small amount of pleasure from insulting his opponents and humiliating them.

Lastly, while there aren’t a ton of differences between younger Kazuma and older Kazuma a few that should be noticed are; older Kazuma tends to be more open with Nora about his plans and a smidge less violent. This is probably due to the fact that Kazuma is able to defend himself now while before he always had to rely on Nora. So when he was younger he used violence and the “forbid” command as a way of reminding everyone that he was still in charge despite not having any abilities of his own. It was all a pride issue, as close to throwing a tantrum as Kazuma comes.

What your character can offer: Kazuma is a very smart guy and often times uses his surroundings and thought out plans to further his goals or to just survive. He’s been taught by Melfia to tap into Nora’s power and has the ability to wrap streams of Nora’s power around his right arm, making it unassailable. He mainly uses his arm to fend off attacks and block them. In addition he has a magical weapon he summons in the shape of a samurai sword. He’s also skilled in various forms of martial arts.

On his right palm he has a star shaped seal. The seal marks Kazuma as Nora’s owner and gives him the ability to “approve” or “forbid” the use of Nora’s magic. The system is set up so Nora has to ask for permission to perform magic in which Kazuma can either “approve” and allow him to use the magic, or “forbid”, which stops Nora from using his magic and tightens the collar around his neck.

What items will they be bringing with them? Two Dark Liege Soul Stones: the wind stone and the fire stone. He won’t be carrying his magical weapon around but he can summon it, though he won’t have access to it until he gets the chip out.

Third-Person Sample: Kazuma had been training with Melfia for over a month and half and could tell he was already much stronger then he had been when they’d started. At first he hadn’t known what to expect, but as time went on he began to feel underwhelmed by it. A normal person would think being trained by a demon to control magic and more importantly, to fight side by side with the world’s would-be strongest demon, would be more…exciting and probably a little scary. But after months of watching Nora take out one demon after the other he was hardly daunted.

Despite getting a kick out of throwing fireballs at him, Melfia wasn’t that bad, or scary, or even mildly intimidating. He’d even grown to respect her as his teacher and listened to her advice. Though he still wasn’t sure why the Snitch had sent Keto-Keto with him. The cat-like boy was used more as target practice than anything else, his teacher’s way of teaching him “team work”. A laughable cause because he wasn’t doing this so he could watch Nora’s back but to become his equal and carry his own weight. They’d both been humiliated by the Resistance one time too many and now, he figured, was the time to even the score, but to do that he needed to be stronger.

In order to do so he spent a majority of his time training and practicing, with or without Melfia. He knew that true strength wasn’t gained overnight and that he would have to work hard, but he was also determined to return home as soon as possible. After all, he had a stray dog to look after. Lord only knew what kind of havoc Nora was causing in his absence. He made a mental note to himself to knock the mutt down a few pegs next time he saw him.

He stood in a clearing in the forest where he’d been sent to train, while all these thoughts danced through his head. Finally he decided it was time to get serious and closed his eyes, focusing on drawing out the magic from the stream and wrapping it around his arm. If there was one thing he had picked up from playing sports, it’s that every offense needed a good defense and he wasn’t about to short change himself on either one.
