Wow - I definitely need to know what new discovery has launched your your opinion so wholly in his favor (not disagreeing with you here at all, just like to hear your thoughts and discoveries).
Did Josh ever have you listen to Randy Newman's Faust? James Taylor as God never failed to amuse the hell out of me.
I think I did listen to part of it, because I remember laughing about James Taylor as Faust, too. I hate James Taylor. I'll probably go and listen to that album sometime soon though. I actually got into Randy Newman a little while ago, maybe a month or two ago. He's kind of sidelined as some sort of '70's anomaly songwriter, or as the guy who writes songs for pixar movies, so I think I (like most people, probably) just hadn't given him enough of a listen to know how good he is. It's funny, because that big hit of his ("short people (got no reason to live)") is remembered as this weird comic novelty, but it's this absurd, funny, biting, ironic song about racism. He just really has the craft mastered, and he's really got shit to say. And he doesn't mind being ironic, funny, or pissing people off. I could probably go on about Randy Newman all day, but you should listen to this: www.curvesoftheneedle.blogspot.com and i'll send you more. :)
There seems to be a generational gap at work, too. It seems that many more people from our parents generation get the irony and wit. I know Dad appreciates Newman considerably (or at least he did, I haven't asked him in awhile).
I'm in agreement with your thoughts, here. The dude is brilliant in many ways. Will head to bloglandia soon. :)
