I just finished Kingdom Hearts II, a video game purchased by Travis and myself about a week ago and was really amazed at how it can manipulate my feelings.  I cried during one part rather close to the end, and after it was done with, when I finished the game about 30 minutes ago, I began to feel.... Almost lonely.... Purposeless.  Rob once told me

Ian, I agree and always cry at video games, its like interactive books where you understand the characters and see what the characters see and you love kairi just as much as Sora does and by god now I'm afraid to find out who dies in kingdom hearts II, but I must keep going!

Stories have always had that ability... video games are just another form of media through which we can tell stories. As much as I have loved these stories and felt much the same as you have (poor Aeris...) I can't help but feel it's a terrible world when the emotions and passions that come from real love and sacrifice and adventure are only available to us through stories... so we buy these things, so that we can BE those characters (subconciously or not) so that we can live those lives, lives where people fight for what they believe in and know that all they need to save the world is their friends and a little hope
