I lived on my stripper savings while interning at a newspaper. After my internship, I got hired by them to be a freelance writer, and I also teach remedial English classes at the community college as an adjunct instructor.

I'm pursuing a math degree (I'm about half way through). I'm getting an education minor so I can teach high school if I'm too burned out to make it all the way through a PhD.

Mostly right now I am living off student loans. I live in Houston, so even though I work closer to Galveston to avoid the brunt of the prostitution, it's so bad now I can barely make any money. Which makes it in some ways more profitable to just not go to work at all. Or very often, at least.

I hope you'll get your PHD. Teaching is heroic

Stripping sounds like misery these days. I had a hard time with what was happening when I left, I can imagine it's gotten worse.

I hope I get the PhD too, though I don't think I'll be teaching if I do (only if I don't - ideally I'd like to work for the gov't doing number theory).

It IS misery now. I'm the only girl in my club who doesn't get groped. It seriously cuts down my income, in an already difficult situation.

I meant teaching instead of the PhD, in a primary school setting, is heroic...or crazy.
Number theory sounds amazing.

Have you considered bartending? Having a bar between you and the customer gives you a feeling of protection and power. the money might be better these days and it certainly will cause less trauma in the long run.

Hahaha, exit strategy? I am still trying to get an entrance one. I work at a strip club as a server/hostess/bartender, but I am seriously thinking about dancing at another club (don't want to pay the Romulus dance card fee so I'll dance outside of it for the moment). I have the shoes, the outfits, the bag. I am just kind of trying to find the time.

One thing I have noticed that is prevalent amongst dancer's blogs-YOGA! This is obviously something I need to get in on lest I be left out ;)

Anyways, I have enjoyed your blog for a few months now although I've yet to post anything. When I figure out how to link things to my blog (http://detroitinhighheels.blogspot.com), I will certainly link yours! Keep writing!

waiting tables is better i_muse December 8 2010, 21:26:33 UTC
I would research bartending instead of stripping.
Nowadays strippers are making the same $20 per "dance" and dances have evolved into a lot more contact, which causes a lot more PTSD.

I've never heard of anyone having PTSD from waiting tables or bartending. Most women I know who stripped had some level of PTSD from it.
Basically, you are fending off predators, would be rapists, all night long. When someone tries to touch your - it is an attempted sexual assault. Many succeed. When someone tries to coax or talk you into letting them touch you or you doing more than you are comfortable with- that is molestation. It happens non stop for an entire shift. It's not worth the money.
If you are healthy and can commit to a schedule, find something better.
Yes, bartending is better, you'll be respected and have a bar between you and the assholes.
Stop envying the women who are stripping. It's not enviable work. It's not easy money. It is a hard way to earn money.

My exit strategy is super similar to yours, I already have SOME certifications completed, but they are all in the health/fitness/healer category ( ... )

wow! sign me up! I'd love to be a part of that tropical paradise/healing spa.
Good luck to you, I know you can do it. The strip industry offers a powerful education for those of us who have "it".
