I'll use your query about the Alaska Quarterly Review as an example.
- It's run out of the University of Alaska-Anchorage, publishes 6 new writers a year, accepts 7-18 manuscripts an issue, and accepts what they label "literary nonfiction". So I know with this magazine will consider my work and not just thow it in the trash. On the flipside, it's a good enough publication (two stories were selected for inclusion in the 2004 O'Henry Awards to make acceptance actually mean something. The only downside to this is that it makes my potential rejection more and more likely.
