I was going to recommend the latter to my English class but I settled on The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test instead because it's been awhile since I read Miller. I should pick it up again this summer.
If both Tropic of Cancer and The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test were being held at matchpoint by vigilante-book-burning-neo-fascists and I could only save one, I would have to choose the latter. No offense to 1930's Paris, but I think Wolfe did the whole boho autobiographical novel thing a bit more to my liking.
I've never been able to make it through Tropic of Cancer, and I've tried multiple times. I don't think of myself as fussy or uptight at all, I think I've just gotten exasperated and never made it far enough to get past all the naughty sex.
It actually took me two tries to get through Tropic of Cancer, but it wasn't on account of the promiscuity and proliferation of gonorrhea. I just had trouble getting over the books apparent lack of plot and structure.
I love Michelle Tea hardcore. I've read everything I can find by her but the Chelsea Whistle, actually. I ordered that and have been waiting patiently for it to arrive in my mailbox. What did you thnik?
man, that makes it look like i lost that fight. i didn't in my mind. megan, i have the chelsea whistle! what i can't find is "the passionate mistakes and intricate corruption of one girl in america."
