summary: when donghae can't sleep, who does he run to? hyukjae, of course.
"hyukjae." hyukjae thought he heard a whisper somewhere to the left of his bed, but he couldn't really be sure. he was half asleep, after all.
"hyukjae," the whisper came again, somewhat more insistent this time.
"mmmmmmmmmm," he stirred, feeling himself caught in that torturous state halfway between sleep and waking, where you don't know whether you're dreaming or conscious. "what is it," he thought he mumbled, one arm flung over his eyes to keep them in darkness (after all, when all this was done, he was going to go back to sleep a.s.a.p), his right hand groping about his bedside table to find the switch for the table lamp.
"it's me, donghae." the voice came again, smaller this time, sounding like a scared child.
"donghae? why are you here... go back to bed," hyukjae yawned, feeling sleep threaten to overtake him once more. he stopped scrabbling futilely at his bedside table, hand falling limply back to his sides. after all, it was only donghae and there was no need to switch on the lights just for him.
"i- i can't. i'm scared...."
"of what? did kyuhyun make you watch one of those horror shows with him again?" honestly, all hyukjae wanted to do was go back to sleep, but this was donghae and he couldn't just flip him off like that. donghae would mope and sulk around the dorms for a whole week, and a depressed donghae was not something to be taken lightly.
"y-yeah. he and sungmin-hyung just laughed through the whole movie like it was nothing."
hyukjae sighed, resigning himself for what he knew was coming. still not removing his arm from over his eyes, he pulled at his blanket and rolled over in bed till there was a snug little space to his right just big enough for donghae.
"honestly, whatever you see in the movies isn't real. but whatever, i guess you can sleep with me tonight. okay?"
"okay!" donghae jumped into bed and hyukjae almost wondered if donghae had planned this, but shook off the thought almost immediately. he's not that scheming and definitely not that smart, he smirked to himself, slinging one leg over donghae and wrapping his arms around him, cuddling him closer just like one would do to a bolster or huge pillow. hyukjae could also feel donghae winding his arms around his torso tightly, burying his face in the crook of his neck, inhaling the scent of him and snuggling closer.
oh well, hyukjae shrugged. this was a pretty conducive way to share body warmth, even if he did say so himself.
"go to sleep, donghae. we've got a long schedule ahead of us tomorrow."
"good night, hyukjae." donghae paused for a beat to bury his face deeper into his shoulder before continuing, his voice muffled. "thanks for letting me sleep here tonight."
with that, donghae curled into him and as his breaths regulated into deep, slow ones, hyukjae smiled.
"good night, donghae," he whispered before closing his eyes and slipping back into dreamland.
