The firstborn had a great teacher in 3rd grade, who was willing to give him more advanced work to keep him interested and engaged. Those teachers are rare and precious.
He elected to "not" do the busywork on things he had already mastered in his later school years, which caused many rocky meetings with teachers and administration. He could score 100% on the test for the subject, so could not be persuaded to do the homework -- neither carrot nor stick worked on that boy.

The smallbear scores quite high in math, but is an English major. She was quite willing to "cooperate and graduate" and do the busywork for things she had already mastered, making her the teacher's dream student in many of her school years.

Is that I knew several kids in high school who were doing poorly - C's, barely passing - until they tested into the Running Start program and started going to the local community college for classes instead. Where they got A's.

Some kids just really need to be challenged or they don't respond at all, which isn't something that our school system is good at handling.
I hope you're able to figure it out.
