Renaud's brow is dripping with sweat and his hands won't stop shaking, so he twists the frayed rope of the purse strings over and over again, tugging it over his knuckles until the skin goes white, then loosening them only to start the tic all over again. When he hears the heavy clang of the barred doors at the far end of the dimly lit hallway swing open and bang against the stone wall, he jumps up too quickly, almost overbalances, and then swipes his sleeve over his face for perhaps the hundredth time. The guard shoves roughly at the two boys, jostling them more than once so that they trip and bump into one another or stumble, tattered frock coats dragging against the rough walls. It makes Renaud's hands curl into fists, but he clenches his jaw and stays silent, tries to exude some degree of patience and composure as the uniformed man snatches up Nicki's manacled wrists and digs a key into the metal, allowing them to fall away so the chain that had connected him to Lestat's set drops and swings against Lestat's thigh.
