We may have a problem with Emmy.

She may have canine Diabetes Insipidus. This is a condition where either the hypothalamus/pituitary glands don't produce/regulate the anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) or enough hormone is produced, but the kidneys can't use it for some reason. In both cases, the end result is that the dog cannot concentrate its urine, ( Read more... )

Yikes! I hope the tests come out well. I had a similar scare with one of my cats a few months ago. I had to bring him back fur further testing, but it turned out that his high blood sugar on the initial test was just stress. I freaked out a lot before I got that confirmation though. Here's hoping your result is similarly benign.

DI isn't sugar-related. That's a bit of good news, actually.

Oh, I've had the human version! It's a side effect of trauma to the pituitary gland. It was a royal pain, let me tell you. The good news is that it's temporary.

'Course, I decided it translated to "stupid diabetes," especially when I kept padding Dow the hall every hour in the middle of the night.

Good luck to the household.

Oh, I am so hoping that whatever is wrong is temporary like that!

Well, not necessarily. DI (for dogs anyway) can be the result of a congenital defect, a tumor in the hypothalamus (which produces the hormone) or the pituitary gland (which regulates it/sends it to the kidneys). It could be due to head injury/trauma. There is the chance she could be on this medication for her entire life.

Hope it's just temporary, or she's crazy in the head...

All dogs are crazy in the head. :-)

But I do hope it's a temporary problem!
