why tumblr sucks

Aug 10, 2012 10:27

Because if I want to reply to someone else's post, I have to post the whole thing on my wall for all of my followers to see. Which seems to me like a recipe for wank.

Also, I only want to post pretty pictures and fancy quotes dammit!

THIS. If tumblr really wants to get a foothold in social media, this must change. So say we.

I agree. I loathe tumblr because it seems like it discourages actual interaction. Everybody's just shooting stuff out into the void, and it seems HORRIBLE to me. I refuse to go there.

I feel like it was originally designed to accommodate easy visual reblogging...you know, art vs. words. A way to disperse pretty pictures, and for that, it's great. But artists NEED feedback and conversation, and tumblr isn't just about the pretty picture anymore! Get with it, tumblr.

The fact that people post fic and textual meta there just blows my mind. The fact that people I'm friends with do it--people who are not 14 years old--blows my mind even more.

Yes, it requires a bit of an exhibitionist streak to talk there. I don't mind meta conversations on my dash though! To be fair, direct replies are possible within the 'answer a question' feature but it's certainly not very polished!

You can't respond to a response, though. Can you? I dunno; tumblr still befuddles me...

Tumblr confuses me. I've followed links to some pretty cool stuff. The Sherlock stuff on there is quite good but I don't really get it, and it doesn't seem to do the stuff that I think it should do as a social media site.

I wouldn't like everything to show up on my page. Can you delete stuff like on Facebook, for example the comment would exist but it wouldn't appear on the news feed?

Hm. I see a peaceful co-existence between tumblr and LJ. Tumblr is more for pretty pictures and gifs. For fic or replying to posts LJ is definitely better, so I just love for people I follow on tumblr to have an LJ as well. Like, I first met sargraf on tumblr and for that post of hers about Dean and Team Free Will it was worth having gotten a tumblr. But I really love that she posted that essay on her LJ cause the thought exchange that followed there just wouldn't have been possible on tumblr.

So yeah, I like both, but for different reasons.
