i scooped up a pack of 50s/60s baby knitting patterns at a vintage clothing sale last week. i'm stoked to knit up some stuff for my newborn nephew, but there are some terms i'm unfamiliar with... i was hoping one of you might be able to help.

W1.fwd. - according to the legend, this means "wool forward". what does that mean? is that 50's for yarn ( Read more... )

re: yarn choice- i'm queen of substituting yarns. i don't think i've EVER followed a pattern using the suggested yarn, and it always turns out fine. as long as the gauge seems close enough, you're golden!

thanks pam! i've got to show you this pattern booklet, it's soooo cute!!
the patterns are all essentially an ad for the yarn, so every pattern begins with a blurb like "To assure yourself of the ultimate in satisfaction when you knit this set for your favorite baby, be sure to use P&B 3 ply Darvan, the yarn for delightful knitting and easy care." even though i know they're ads, it sketched me out about substituting.

i saw the mitten you were working on in poli soc! i live mitten patterns that are worked flat - so much more portable! yours reminds me of beetlejuice
