In order for the ending to make any sense, you have to know about Unix process management. When processes exit, they report their exit codes to their parents, which should be waiting for them to exit. If their parents are not waiting for them to exit, they are kept in the "zombie" state. The wait() system call causes one of your zombie children to give you an exit code and disappear entirely.
