Security had been called before they arrived and they were just dragging their burger fed carcasses into the Peds ward as Callie and Arizona arrived. The man causing the commotion was stood in front of the nurses station his fists clenched. He looked less like a man, more a man shaped house. Arizona kept her distance as she headed to the locker rooms to throw on some scrubs. Callie followed, but her eyes remained on the man now being restrained by security. He had a temper, and if this case was what she thought it was likely he was they reason they were here today. Her lip curled in disgust as she entered into the locker room and began to undress.
“Don’t let it get to you baby. Our focus is on the boy. Let people bigger and nastier than the father deal with what he did. We have to make that little boy better.”
Callie knew that Arizona was talking sense. But it was hard for her to compartmentalize as easy as Arizona did. She was around hurt children all day, Callie wasn’t. Although she knew Arizona would be screaming inside as much as she was, Arizona could control herself until she was away from the situation. As they re-entered the ward Arizona grabbed the required chart from the nurses station and led Callie to the room where their patient was waiting. Nothing she had ever seen before prepared Callie for what was laying there.
The boy couldn’t be more than two years old. The bruising over his face and chest was so extensive that he looked as though over half of his skin was a livid purple color. There were what appeared to be burn marks on his tiny little arm and there was a severe compound fracture of his left tibia. The bone was snapped clean in two and at least two inches protruded through the skin. Arizona held up the preliminary x-rays taken shortly after the child arrived. Callie could visibly see two fractured ribs on the right hand side of his body and his pelvis was fractured. She chewed her lip as she looked at the films. Fighting an urge to unleash merry hell on the monster who did this. Arizona looked as though she wanted to do the same.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us. As well as the fractures, we have a lacerated liver, lung and small bowel. There is bruising on his right kidney and his spleen is inflamed.” Arizona seemed to stumble over the words as though hoping she was mistaken. Callie’s heart seemed to stop beating as she saw the pain in Arizona’s eyes. She wanted to hold her and tell her it would be ok. But with all these people around it wouldn’t be right.
“As if he hasn’t been through enough, now we have to open the poor little guy up and put him through more.” Callie shook her head as she said it. The baby was so small. He couldn’t defend himself, didn’t deserve this. As Callie processed the hideousness of the situation Bailey entered the room silently. Both Arizona and Callie turned simultaneously as Bailey cleared her throat.
“According to the father, who is now at the mercy of Seattle’s police department, Lucas here fell. Yeah that’s right he fell. Oh and when he fell the dog jumped on him. If SPD believe that, they need Shepherd to check their heads.”
Callie loved Baileys bluntness. It was refreshing. She said what everyone thought but were too polite to say. And everyone loved her for it. “Torres, I uh… I need to talk to you when you have a second.” Callie didn’t have a second right now. They needed to get Lucas into the OR as soon as possible. At his age, that compound fracture would get infected really quickly.
“After we are done with saving this little guy’s life I’ll come find you. But right now he is top priority.” Baileys nod of agreement told Callie that whatever it was, wasn’t vital. If it was really serious Bailey would have argued. Boy could she argue. Bailey wished them luck, while promising to keep them informed as much as possible as to what was going on with the father. Callie couldn’t help wonder why there was no mother here. But judging on the performance of the father she wouldn’t doubt if the mother was cowering in a corner somewhere, too afraid to move.
“Lets get him up to the OR.” Arizona’s voice interrupted Callie’s mental queries. Nodding once as Arizona gave directions to the interns and nurses as to what she wanted done Callie made her way out into the hall to go scrub in. Arizona caught up with her as they both entered into clean up. They had barely spoken today but it was incredible to Callie how much understanding passed between them during the course of their examinations.
Lucas was wheeled in to the OR shortly before they both entered. The nurses and other assembled assistance were ready to go and after a short game of rock paper scissors, to which Callie lost, Arizona’s choice of CD was set to go. Within Temptation wasn’t what Callie would have associated with Arizona, but the blonde was full of surprises.
“Are we all set?” Callie couldn’t help by feel infected by hope hearing it in Arizona’s voice. But this poor little guy had been put through the ringer and they didn’t know just how much more he could take. They had to work fast and pray that Lucas was stronger than he looked right now.
