They had been locked in the On-Call room for an hour. Arizona had Callie cradled in her arms as she sobbed uncontrollably. Everything had gone perfectly, the fractures had been set, the lacerations to his organs had been sealed superbly. They both felt like artists as they left it to the senior interns to close up. Which they had done a hundred times before. It was his heart, it just couldn’t take anymore strain. They had worked for hours, it just wouldn’t stay beating, no matter what they tried. There were no holes, no physical deformaties of any kind, they just could not keep him from giving up. Arizona was handling it as she always did, by filing it away in a mental box marked ‘do not open.’ Callie was never that good at putting things in boxes. She was angry and defeated. Arizona’s arms seemed to be the only thing holding her together. She was a surgeon and to lose a life, especially one so young went against everything she had ever believed in.

Arizona had let her just get it out. Callie loved that about her, she just never judged her. Callie put it down to the rough start they had and how nothing was ever as it seemed. So now both of them just went with it, whatever happened.

Twenty minutes later Callie had regained her composure, she had straightened herself out and was ready to head home. Their day off still had at least a couple of hours. Callie wanted sleep and the safe security of feeling Arizona’s gentle breathing on her neck as they lay entwined together as they dreamt. Callie’s gentle pull on Arizona’s hand towards the door was met with resistance. Callie turned and felt Arizona’s lips on hers almost immediately. It was a frenzied, desperate kiss full of longing, anger, frustration and lust. One which Callie recognized instantly as Arizona’s way of crying out. As they broke apart with a gasp the unspoken agreement, which sealed off today’s events, was signed.

“I’ll wait for you down in the lobby, I have some paperwork to file and get changed. You have to see Bailey remember?” Callie had completely forgotten and in the grand scheme of things couldn’t see anything that was important enough it couldn’t wait till tomorrow. Callie shook her head and led Arizona towards the door.

“Bailey can wait. I want to go home, have a hot shower and curl up with you in front of a bad movie, a glass or five of wine, and a cheeseburger.” It sounded like a pretty perfect night for Callie, the look on Arizona’s face let Callie know that she was in agreement.

“Ok, you head home and get your shower. I’ll be there with the wine and the cheeseburgers in an hour. I want to swing by mine and grab a change of clothes first.” Callie loved how natural this all was. It was so effortless and easy like breathing.

“it’s a date.” Callie gave Arizona a warm smile that Arizona returned with even more warmth than the sun as she left the room, giving Callie a gentle kiss as she passed. Callie needed to make a quick exit before Bailey found her. She really wasn’t in the mood to get caught up with something else today. Luckily or not, Bailey was at the nurses station just outside the door but her back was to Callie, which would make an escape easier. She slipped quietly from the room, and headed towards the elevators. The halls were busier than earlier when they arrived, families arriving for visiting hours and new arrivals loitered around making it easier for Callie to disappear.

The thought of her night to come seemed to make her footsteps feel lighter and she sped up, realizing that she had about an hour to take a shower, make herself presentable and pick out the perfect movie to end the day. It wasn’t really fitting to have a romance or a comedy. Nor did she want a horror or mystery. A musical perhaps? She would make up a short list and have Arizona decide as she had the movie senses of a pro.

The elevator was taking forever, as though it knew she was on a deadline. As she stood there she realized that several of the significant events in her life lately had taken place in an elevator. Erica kissed her for the first time in one. Arizona asked her out in one. Arizona had pinned her against the walls of one and gave her a kiss so passionate that her lips were still feeling it several hours later. In fact that happened quite often and it never got old.

As the doors slid open she stepped into the empty room with a smug grin. What else could she pursued Arizona to do in an elevator. The jolt of excitement that ran through her came as a shock to Callie, she had resisted the lust aspect of their relationship and was working towards trying to have meaningful sex, love filled, rather than lust. That’s why they had waited so long, they could have given in after the Boxing incident. They were both on a high and feeling elated after their first proper kiss and Callie’s display of fighting prowess. But they had resisted it wasn’t the right time, too soon.

They had been dating at least six weeks now and the official dates where getting close to nine. Though unofficially the sleep-overs and lunches made it many more. Callie could feel the time was getting closer. They both knew that this was the real thing and so waiting much longer would just be an act of torture. Callie’s thoughts were so distracted in the realms of possibility and desire that she didn’t notice the doors sliding open on the elevator. The blonde curls obstructed her view as Callie looked at the back of the new entrant into the elevator.

“You look good Torres.”

“Erica?”
