Dr Lewis was right.

I am glad to come around to everything restored. My many thanks to those of you who brought it about in one capacity or another.

[Private to Jim]I'm asking the other wardens to take you to zero. This is not as much a punishment as direct consequences of your actions. I ask you to go with them quietly and calmly. You will be ( Read more... )

Of course. I'll bring them by the infirmary.

[Pause.]

No... How did you know I saw anything? [Ghosts are totally new to him.]

Thank you.

I... I remember it all. In a faded, distant sort of fashion, but I remember what I did, and that you were there.

They saw me last time, too.

How? I've never heard of anybody retaining awareness after...

How many times has this happened?

If I knew, I would tell you. It is the sort of thing that... I used to tell the boys was nothing more than superstition and nonsense. Like believing spiced rum would make you more virile. But after a certain point, you can't deny what's happened, even if you can't understand it.

Now, twice. Once, in life, and now again. What you saw was not the... memory of what happened to me here, but of my actual, mortal death. I didn't know it could happen again. I'm still quite amazed it happened once.

Sorry I..

I apologise if that was unnecessary information, it's just... difficult to stop thinking of.

An incident happened, Mr Hoffman.

It wasn't them. You did a good job saving me from that.

An inmate?

It wasn't Lua was it?

It wasn't Lua. But the rest is between me and involved parties, Mr Hoffman. I hope you understand why.

Doctors are always terrible patients, I think.

I'll talk to Rex and don't worry about the rest at the moment.

Do you need anything? How's your pain level?

Comes with the territory.

It's all... noted down for you. Somewhere.

Not immediately. The pain is less bothersome than the sense of asphyxia and inability to talk.

Don't worry about it for right now, Doctor. Really, I trust Rex.

Would you be willing to try a healing potion? It may help with the inability to speak. I can't say for certain because we've never tried it before.

As do I, but... just keeping things in... yes.

I would rather not. I prefer medicine I actually understand the function of, and I've had enough of superstiti magic certainly is not something I can approach with understanding.

Of course. I'll wait outside the warden area to be escorted down.
