"I'm bored," Joe whines, wondering into Nick's room and flopping on his bed. Nick looks up from his laptop, rolls his eyes and closes the computer most of the way.
"Get your shoes off of my bed."
Joe sighs, and toes his shoes off, flinging them across the room without getting up. "Better?"
Nick looks at the spot where the shoes hit the wall. "I guess. Why are you in my bed right now?" Joe waggles his eyebrows at Nick, smiling up at him. "Yeah, okay Joseph. Because you know mom totally wouldn't be up here in two minutes banging on the door if it was closed. God forbid one of us locks a door around here."
"Fine," Joe mumbles. "Let's go somewhere then."
"Where?"
"Um. Dunno."
Nick gets up and walks over to his bed, and sits down, prompting Joe to sit up and scramble over to him, wrapping his arms around his brother's waist. Nick sighs and gives in, letting Joe do the cuddling thing that he likes to do so much.
"We could... Oh! The county fair is in town! Can we go to the fair?" Joe asks, suddenly jumping up and grabbing his shoes that he kicked off not minutes before.
"I- Really Joe?"
"Please?" Nick knows he can't say no to Joe when he makes that stupid puppy dog face, so he pulls on his Chucks, lacing them up slowly.
The two boys get permission to borrow the car, and after a brief arguement, Nick ends up in the driver seat, with Joe sulking in the passanger seat. "Come on Joey. You know you'll just get us lost, and plus you can pick the music." He reaches out and grabs his brother's hand, lacing their fingers together. He drives the entire way to the fairground with one hand on the steering wheel, and the other holding onto Joe's, running his thumb over his brother's fingers.
They pull into the lot, park, and head into the fairgrounds. Joe's eyes glow as he looks around taking in all the lights and sounds and smells. Nick watches Joe take it all in, pausing to glance nervously at the ferris wheel, and then turning his attention back to Joe. "Where do you wanna start?"
"Rides. Games. Um. Yeah, games." Joe rambles on, grabbing Nick's hand and tugging him towards the far side of the grounds, where the games were. At the start of the midway, Joe drops Nick's hand and snakes his arm around his waist. "Gonna win you somethng," Joe says.
"Oh, yeah?" Nick smiles. "What are you gonna win me?"
Joe looks around for a minute or two before his eyes fall on a water gun race where the prize shelf was full of neon colored teddy bears. "That," he points. Nick grins and heads over to the game, Joe's arm still wrapped around his waist. He pulls a dollar bill out of his pocket and hands it to the woman behind the booth, then slips away so Joe can get to the water gun. Nick rests his hand low on Joe's back while they wait for a few more people to join in the race. Finally, the woman flicks the switch to start the race and Joe's attention turns away from the warm hand creeping up the inside of his t-shirt. Finally, the buzzer goes off signaling that someone has won, and Nick's eyes snap up to see that Joe had just edged out ahead to beat a girl who looked about eight years old to first place.
"Young man- any price from the top shelf," the woman says to Joe.
Joe turns to Nick, and raises his eyebrow in question.
"You pick," Nick whispers.
"The blue one," Joe says. The woman reaches up and pulls a blue teddy bear off of the shelf, smiling as she hands it to Joe. He thanks her and turns to Nick, giving him a quick kiss as he hands him the bear. "You're turn to pick, Nicky," Joe says, wrapping his arm back around Nick's waist, playing with the hem of Nick's shirt.
"Um. I want to win you something now."
"Okay, where to?"
Nick points, and the pair heads off in the direction of a balloon popping game. Joe hands the man behind the counter the money and recieves three darts in return. He hands one to Nick, stepping back and holding on to the other two. Nick throws the first dart and pops a balloon. Joe hands him the second dart, he throws and he misses. Giving Nick a nervous smile, Joe hands him the last dart. Popped.
"Anything from the middle shelf, kid," the man growls.
Nick turnde to Joe apologetically. "The samll ones..."
Joe wraps his arms around his brother's waist. "It's fine, they're cuter. I want the green one."
The carnival worker pulls the green bear that matches Nick's and hands it over. Joe pulls Nick away and starts tugging him to the rides side of the fairground. "I wanna go on a ride now."
Nick swallows hard and clances nervously around. "Um. Which one?"
"Can we go on the ferris wheel?"
Nick feels himself instantly flushing. Joe notices. "What's wrong, Nicky?"
"You know I hate the ferris wheel..."
"Yeah, I do but I thought that maybe... Y'know. I'll be there." He looks at Nick, his eyes both hopeful and worried.
Nick returns the gaze. "I- I guess," he whispers nervously. Joe's smile grows and he throws his arms around Nick's neck. Nick sighs nervously and tries to untangle himself from Joe. "Come on before I change my mind," he mumbles. Joe procures some ride tickets from somwhere in his pockets. The boys climb into the shaking car on the ride. Joe tries to sit across from Nick, but Nick grabs his hand and pulls Joe down next to him.
"Don't worry Nick. It'll be fun," Joe attempts to assure him. Nick wraps himself into Joe and nods, not quite believing him. Joe puts his arm around Nick and kisses the top of his head, and starts to run his fingers through the curls at the base of Nick's neck to calm him down. The car lurches forward as the ride starts , and Nick jumps a mile, moving even closer into Joe. "You're fine, babe, I've got you," Joe murmers into Nick's curls. He moves a little, forcing Nick to at least look forward, but keeping his body pressed tight to Joe's. "Look," Joe points. "Our school. Dad's store. Home." He turns to look at Nick. He looks- well, not completely terrified.
As the ride begins to descend, Nick leans away to look up at Joe. "You did this on purpose, didn't you? You knew I'd spend the entire ride hiding in your shoulder, letting you do that- that cuddling thing you like so much."
Joe grins down at him, tilding Nick's head up to give him a quick kiss. He pulls Nick back unto his original curled up position. "Yeah, maybe."
