I know this isn't my entry but I felt the need to express my feelings on how we live north of the city, yes, and maybe it more up in new york state than you are, but we are certainly not upstate. Buffalo, Binghamon? Those are at least 2 and a half hours more north than us. So what do you call them? Up-up state?

no...they are upstate as well. you are in the same category. if you were to look at a map of new york, oriented with north pointing up, and you pointed to mahopac, it would be, in relation to new york city, up. thus, you are upstate. accept it and move on. plenty of good people have come from upstate. but yes, you are upstate.

Maps don't mean anything. If you were to look at the type of people in Mahopac and the surrounding areas (westchester and all of putnam (minus carmel)) you too would see that they are not hicks, they don't drive tractors, and they don't wear flannel, or have sex with their siblings, but if you were to drive 1 hour north of us, you would see upstate, or the beginning of upstate, but son, westchester and putnam county are clearly "suburbs of NYC" not upstate, no how and no way.

i dont think your definition of upstate is very accurate. i'm sure there are people who live north of you who are not hicks, that drive cars, wear normal clothes and have sex with prostitutes and lonely housewives just like you and i. by the same means, i'm sure theres people in westchester and putnam that are hicks, that drive tractors, wear flannel, and have sex with their siblings. as there probably are on long island. you're still north of the city, thus you're upstate.
